yeah I obviously don't know squat about amps... what's the difference between a tube amp and a regular amp, although I've heard people say tube amps produce much better tone
Their are amps that use vacuum tubes ie: tube amps and solidstate or transistor amps that use all circuitry in stead of tube amps. jeromeoneil is correct in the tonal discription of a tube amp.

I have been playing alone on a cheap fender starter type amp (fender frontman amp) for years now mostly playing to recorded music. I am thinking about upgrading to a better amp. I was wondering if someone could give me some advise on shopping for something nicer that I could use when jammin with other people. My guitar is a Gibson Lucille
another question what is the difference between an acoustic amp and a regular amp. is a regular amp sufficiant for an acoustic guitar
Regarding your question on what the difference between acoustic and electric amps. First the obvious (not trying to be funny) one is made for electrics and the other for acoustics. The electrics will have an open back to allow air to flow and carry your sound although you also lose sound that is not being driven forward. THe acoustics are usually all closed because they will feed back quicker due to the reverberation (or vibration of the sound chamber) of an acoustic. So if you can play an acoustic through an electric amp but you will not be able to playt very loud because it will feedback in a hurry.
Take your guitar and try out various amps see which one sounds better for you. Generally a good 30 watt tube amp will workout fine for a practisc and small club amp. You can always run it through the house board in a club if you need more sound.

Hi PJ, an acoustic amp is more like a hi-fi amp, it tries to amplify all frequencies the same amount. An acoustic amp tries to take the natural guitar sound and just put it through the speaker (they do have tricks like chorus and reverb but nothing too gross). A regular electric guitar map is cruder, it tends to boost mid-frequencies, giving that in-yer-face electric guitar sound.
Practise amps can be used in bands, the fender champ was a favourite, smaller amp = easier to overdrive. Gauging volume needed is tricky, my own is only 8 watts but can go very loud at home. However at guitar class I couldn't even hear it over a rousing chorus of acoustics strumming 'Johnny B Goode'!
Gibson Lucille has no F-holes right? I think this was done to reduce distortion, so you'd be going against type getting a hi-gain amp and trying to create alot of snarl. Natural match would be a clean amp like a Fender Twin but take it along plug in, you'll know when you get the sound you want.
A gibson Lucille is a ES-335 with out sound holes although it is still an arch top (not a solid body) so it probley still feedback. Depending on what you want to do as mentioned by johncross 21 will determine which wattage (how much amp you need) to buy.

Hi,
I have a Tanglewood Tomkat. It has two Humbucker pickups. I have had the guitar for around 9 years, but have only just started playing again after a break of 5 years or so.
I have been reading reviews of the guitar (the internet wasn't as easily accessible 9 years ago!) and most people say it is great value but is let down by the cheap generic pickups.
Can anyone recommend new ones - I like to listen to all sorts of rock, but I love to play Blues Rock, so pickups that would suit this genre would be preferable. I am not a millionaire so nothing too extravagant!
I have also started home recording, and am aware that better pickups would probably give me better results as well.
Any recommendations gladly received.
Cheers guys,
Stu
Go to the Michael Kelly website and take a look at the Valor customs. Their is a sound byte on a band called Ademption the song is my everything. They use Rockfield SWC pickups the go for $100.00 american a set. I have set on order but they have not hit my door yet. Since your on the MK website check out the Valor "X" that's my next guitar (I have weighed the cost & labor to build a new guitar and since I have not finished the three I am currently building) I have decided to to order that one.

That's why I mentioned about storing that one away and looking for a new one. (just not in these words)

I think you can tell - the strings lose their tone, they become dull and lifeless. When I was playing very regularly and in a practise band, I changed mine once a month, which to be honest was probably leaving it a bit too long. Problem is a set of strings is around £5.00, so I would imagine a lot of people cannot afford to change them too regularly anyway.
I would think changing them weekly is too often - it can take a day or two for new ones to bed in anyway...that means you only get 4-5 days use out of them!
The only time that you would need to change your strings is if you were giging a couple times a week playing at lease four hours a night. Then you notice the change in the tone of your strings and the grime of your sweat. But I agree with your choice of strings I like Dr's.
Bootlegger.
I change mine when they are visibly worn.
Sometimes I change them if I can't get the guitar to intonate correctly. That is a sign of dead strings.
Also, I change the strings everytime I get a new guitar.Dm
If your guitar does not intonate correctly it is not the strings but your intonation. A dead string is flat or sounds dull even when tuned. To intonate your guitar tune each string using an electronic tuner, low E first then hit an harmonic on the 12th fret if it reads in tune on your tuner then that string is intonated if not turn the screw on the bridge until it reaches tune. When it is in tune at the harmonic 12th fret then proceed with the other five strings.

Phil,
Go to www.boss.com and you'll find the information you are looking for. I like boss effects and get great deals (at cost) because I have a friend that I grew up with who works for Roland (boss parent company). She gets me all the gear I can afford.

Thanks for your reply but it appears that headphones don't operate as the outlet does not cut off the speakers,on a electric amp you can discon the speakers but the accoustic has a back cover so you don't have access.any ideas would most welcome.Slangevar.
Now that you have in a sense clarified that your Marshall is an acoustic amp per your statement above that it (the amp) "has a solid back cover" and no headphone jack (headphones don't operate as the outlet does not cut off the speakers). You can't use headphones on your amp because it is not made to be used with headphones. To modify it to accept headphones would void thew warranty and cost to much.

Because you havfe a guitar with humbucker pickups .010" gauge is the minimum you should use. .009"s will sound a bit tinny for humbuckers.

Noise suppressors are helpful primarily for internal circuitry noise reduction. If you're standing too close to your amp or getting interference from neon lights, laptop computers, or other wave signal sending devices, the NS-2 isn't gonna do very much. Perhaps a slight relocation of your amp might be the solution to your problem. I love Boss pedals though, they're all I use. You could also try changing the order of your pedal location, swith 'em around, tinker with your sound, ya know?
Southpaw41L is correct the noise gate (suppressor) is for electronic noises or a filter for your signal chain so to speak. He is also correct in saying that you have to move away from your amp so you don't feed back.

I bought the DVD today and watched the whole thing. it was great. It make me want to practice and become a better guitar player
Hey P.J.
Tell me that it was money well spent I know when I bought mine it was. What did you think of Robert Randolph on the slide guitar. Hearing it made me go out and buy both his cd's.
Glad you enjoyed it.

If you think about it it is desire and passion. Do you truly love music and to what extent are you willing to go to achieve it? Are you willing to take lessons and practice? Are you willing to forsake your friends and or a girlfriend/boy friend (if your a guy or a girl) to practice? It is the time you invest and also the effort you put forth.
In your blood No! In your heart and soul definitly YES!

Acoustic pickups are usually piezeo pickups or sound hole mounted pickups. They have a 1/4" male plug on the end. You may also hard wire them to a female mono jack and plug chord and play. Why do you have a fixtation on kill switches if you don't want to play amplified don't plug it in.

What people forget is that Jimi Hendrix was a saxaphone player for the Isley Brothers and Little Richard before becoming a guitar player. He took what he learned on the sax and transposed it to his guitar playing. If you open up a Guitar Player magazine they usually have lessons and one time they had sax notes for a guitar.

It could be the type of magnets and or the winding K value. The will both effect the tone and output of the pickups.

A guy at the guitar center told me the $799 SG is as good musically as the higher priced Gibsons, just no frills, no gold plating, no lacquer finish. True or false?
Well, it will sound good but as good no because the type of wood and the weight of the guitars. The tonal quailties will be different more sustain from the higher priced heavier guitar. The amount of $799.00 buys alot of guitar, their are great MIK's out there (made in Korea). Play a MK (michael kelly www.michaelkelly.com) you can buy one and still have about $ 150.00 to change pickups if you want.

You have either a high spot on the fret or it is not set correctly. Take it in and have the fret dressed cost should be minimal.
Good luck.
Bootlegger.
When you put them on wind them tight and tug on them a few times up & down. Then hold the string down with one hand and tug the string with the other hand. Tune and play then retune the next day.

Stewart & Mac Donald. www.stewmac.com they sell world wide. Unless the rosette is all the way off or you know what your doing don't attempt to do it yourself. It also depends on how much money you have to spend to take it to a shop the repair may cost 1/2 the price of a faily decent new guitar. (I don't know the cost of classical guitars).
Good luck.

Hello Mr Bootlegger, Just curious but I was wondering if you kwew the answer to my question
First of all please don't call me mister I am a regular guy, but thank you for the respect. I did see your request I just haven't had a chance to to reply (or the time). If any loss in tone it would be minimal due to the fact that inlay's are usually 0.50" and a fret board before the radius is .250 thick. Sorry about the time.

H all,
as a fe know I went to the hospital to get a camera rammed down my throat to look at my vocal cords as the doc says he thought I had songers nodes. Well he as wrong, I have A singer node. only only one on my cord.
I have to go to get voice traiging and anti biotics and anti acid things for three months then go cak to see if I will get the star trek lase gun down my throat, so everything is fine. The camera I got was put up my nose to go down my thraot. not very nice. He told me to breath in and not to swallow but if anyone has had this done , it is very hard, so I tried to swallow, I gagged and I coughed saliva all over him, some over his face, ,lol, I did warn him about my nose and things going up it,lol.
apart from the vocal cords he noticed my septum is bent, which i already knew but got told nothing could be done ( trying to get rid of as many patients off the national health sevice list he thinks) but it can be done, so after my cords are mended i will g in for the burnig of the septum so i can breath easily, or easier. This all means after my cords are done and my nose my singing should improve..... i know, hard to believe I can get any better tha nI already am but tis true!!! ,lol, I might even appear on one of those tings wit hsuimon cowel and tell him where to go when he begs me to sign for him, lol( yes, I have been ot and had a drink, lol)
Ken
Well K.O.S. be glad they could fix the problem from the north side and did'nt try the southern side to get there:lol: Glad to hear your doing better.
