Hey, I've experimented with writing music, but I never could finish a song, or tie parts together.  Anyway, one day I was bored so I sat down and came up with this one-page thing, basically some chords tied together with notes.  This became my intro, as I wrote another nine pages.  There's still some work to be done with the repeating melodies and whatnot, but overall I think it's a descent piece (I play it on my acoustic).  I'd like to call it something other than "original guitar composition".  I suppose the name should match the overall sound of the music.  Does anyone have any advice on naming a song like this?

Yeah, I had never heard of them either, until my friend decided to sell off most of his guitars.  I ended up buying a Danelectro Hodad 12-string from him-awesome sound and playability.  I don't think they make the 12 strings anymore.  The one I have is of great build quality, made in Korea, with sweet lipstick pickups.  Good brand

Do tabs for this song exist?

I'm one of those people who wants versatility, mainly because I like many types of music, including country, rock, and some early metal.  Buying a guitar for each type is not practical, especially for me.

Basing it solely on my love for sweet guitar playing, Eric Johnson's Cliffs of Dover tops my list.  Basing it everything, not just guitar, I'd have to say No More Lonely Nights by Paul McCartney.  One more, not just because it's on Guitar Hero, Through The Fire and Flames.

Hey, does anyone know where tabs can be found for the version of We Three Kings on Guitar Hero 3? I think it's by Steve Ouimett (spelled right?), but I didn't find his name on this site.  It's a pretty sweet rendition of the song, and I think it would sound great on my electric 12-string.

Wow, that would be great.  However, I don't want to buy stuff for the guitar when I don't have it yet-I'm making a couple payments on it, but I should have it by the middle of next month.  I don't really want to buy stuff for the guitar when I don't have it yet, but I'm pretty sure I'll take you up on the offer.  Just don't bother making one quite yet-I'll let you know when I want to get it, and we can work out the buying info then.  Thanks a lot

That defintately is part of the learning process.  You should of heard how my G and D chords sounded for a long time.  It took about four or five months before I could play an F, B, or any bar chord.  Every time you practice chords, they get more clear and sound better.  Your fingers adjust better to the position, and after a while you don't even need to look at your fingers.  Good luck!

hogwash! the reason good guitar players are playing les pauls, telecasters, and stratocasters is they are the hallmark of quality and have set the standard in the industry from the beginning.all you have to do is observe what the rest of the brands resemble if they dont look like a fender or a gibson model odds are the newbie guitarist will not look twice and thats why a vintage fender or gibson demands a high price ticket.so while copies may be as good or better the fact is they are still copies not the origional.

You're right, that's why so many great guitarists chose models like Strats, Teles, LP's, and SG's.  But when people see their idols playing these guitars, they want them too.

You're right when you talk about seeing the great bands and artists playing them.  People who are AC/DC fans often will gravitate toward SG's, SRV and Clapton fans toward Strats, and so on.  This is especially true when you see the "signature" models-there are many different "signature" Fenders and Squiers, and a good number of Gibsons and Epis too.  So you're right, a lot of it is "overexposure".

And how much would that run?

Thanks for the info.  I'm not sure I really want to try making my own, though.  Is there an LP-style (I've seen them on Gretsch guitars too) pickguard with no humbucker cutouts?  I don't think that the Gretsch ones have the cutouts.  By the way, the guitar is a dark metallic blue with some purple mixed in, with a rosewood fretboard and of course, the chrome covered lipsticks.

Just curous, is the lowest string on a 7-sting a low B?

Edit-never mind, I didn't read all of the topic.  It is a low B.

By putting on some Martin Marquis, my Rogue became a Martin (I've played my uncle's Martin before).  Another change in sound by throwing on some Clapton Signatures.  So with my experience, yes, the strings make the sound.

In a localish pub they have acoustic night every Sunday night, i want to enter but i'm not sure i would be good enough, I think its more lack of confidence in myself more than anything else, but i so want to stand up and let people hear me do some covers and a couple of my own tracks.

I always have to think to myself that I've only been playing for a year but I feel pretty advanced compared to some people, has anyone been in my position? Got any tips for me? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, you sound exactly like me.  I've played guitar for a year (on an acoustic), and I've been told that I learned a lot faster than most people, as I can play many differnt riffsf, songs, and a few solos. I was considering playing a solo (I'm not really a singer) for my school's talent show last December, but I didn't think I could play it good enough (like you, lack of self-confidence), so I didn't sign up.  Needless to say, the show was canceled due to lack of interest, as hardly anyone signed up.  I've decided that if I get an opportunity to play for people again, I'm jumping on it.  I'm going to try to start playing with others, too.  So don't be like me-take an opportunity if you get it.  Good luck!

Hey, I'm fairly new to the world of guitar solos.  I learned to solo on my acoustic, as I'm getting my first electric in about a month.  You don't hear acoustic solos very often, but after listening to Clapton Unplugged I decided to give it a try.  I was able to try soloing on an electric when I tried out my soon-to-be Dano Hodad last week.  Anyway, my question is, am I doing things right when I solo? I basically just move my fingertips from fret to fret-I try to finger chords if at all possible.  I know that there really is no "right way" of doing this, as Herman Li from Dragonforce solos with his hand on top of the fretboard.  I'm just wondering if there are any tricks or techniques I can use to make things a bit easier, or is good old practice makes perfect how it's done? Thanks

You know, for $50 I can't complain at all about my 6-string Rogue. . .they also make a $100 12-string. . .but maybe you're looking for something better.

Is it possible to find something for say, $25 or less? I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of money on a pickguard, if I can't find one, oh well.  Even if something custom can't be made that cheap, is it possible to fit one of those Les Paul pickguards on? They look like they would fit on almost anything.

Hey, for anyone who knows anything about Danelectro guitars, I'm wondering if I can get a pickguard to fit on a 12-string Hodad.  There are 3 lipstick pickups.  It's not a big deal, but I just think that the guitar would look more finsished with a nice pearloid pickguard.  Is there a type of generic, 3-pickup pickguard that I can find somewhere?

I agree, McCartney is my favorite in terms of his solo work.  What I think made the Beatles such a great band is the diversity of their music.  You can't compare a song like Love Me Do with Revolution, or Yesterday with Lucy in The Sky with Diamonds-they're all great songs in their own right.  The originality of their melodies and lyrics also are a huge part of why the group was so great.  They were real pioneers when in came to music, in many genres.  Also, Lennon and McCartney each went on to have good solo careers, and Harrison did some good solo stuff too.  Definately one of, if not the greatest band of all time.

This Danelectro Hodad I'm trying out has a hollow body.  It's loud enough unplugged, you can almost play it as an acoustic.  It doesn't seem to affect the sound when it's overdriven, though.

You should probably see if there is a way to lower the neck pickup slightly. I've never adjusted the pickup height on a Danelectro but it shouldn't be much different than any other guitar.

Any idea of how this is done?

Never mind, I figured it out.  Easy adjustment, just a few screws on the back of the guitar lowered the pickups.  Actually, it tightened them.  They were quite loose before, and they were hitting the strings on the 20 and 21st frets.  Anyway, I have the guitar at my home with me.  He's letting me try it for a few days.  I tried out the little "amp in a bag" that came with the case-surprisingly loud for a 3 inch speaker, also has overdrive and a headphone jack.  I also am trying the 30-watt Crate.  I love the Crate-lots of features, but not so many where it becomes confusing.  Has 3 channels, clean, drive, and chorus.  I really don't need 30 watts, but who cares? Unlike most people, I actually like the sound of the guitar overdriven rather than clean.  It really gives a much more full sound than a 6-string.  The body is a lttile different, Strat-like, but angled slightly.  It has the best high-fret access of any guitar I've played.  Also, the 7-way pickup switching is a great feature.
Am I buying it? Well, I'm letting him know for sure yes or no tommorow.  I really don't think I'm going to find a better deal.  The guitar, gig bag, mini amp, cable, and Crate amp all for $300.  Besides, I really love the guitar.  I was a little unsure about having a 12-string as my main electric, but it does everything a 6-string does, and more.  Soloing, as I found, is actually easier with 12 strings (and no, I am not very proficient at soloing).  My little review here probably sounds like a load of bull-not everything can be that good, can it? I'll admit, the guitar has it's flaws-I'm not crazy about the looks, it only has 21 frets, no tremolo system, there are some songs were the 12-string doesn't sound as good as a 6, tuning takes a while, and changing strings won't be fun.  Despite this, I find that my personal preference is the 12-string, for the feel, playability, and sound.  I'll let you guys know if I buy it.  Again, thanks for all the helpful reviews and info on Dano guitars.

Well as as 2 days ago I was given a very low budget to work with, so I decided that for the buck a Line 6 Spider III 15w was the way to go, some nice features for only $100.

I went last night to a Fender dealer with the wife and kids. He has everything from $150 Squires up to $4,000 fender customs.

While we where there 2 guys where playing the guitar independently, one was playing a $200-$300 Squire, and the other was playing an American Fender. My wife overheard the 2 playing and asked what was so different about the 2 of them, one sounded so sweet and the other sounded kinda tonal. They where both on about the same playing level, far beyond mine of course. However she pointed to the one with the American Fender and said WOW I like that one.

This was my chance to slip it in there the difference in price means the difference in what you get. So needless to say my budget just went from $400 to to around what I can get an off color (pink) American Fender or a used American Fender for. However I might have to wait a few more weeks to actually go get one. Even if I don't decide to go the Fender route I now have $500-$600 to spend on just the guitar. hehehe

I am SOO glad we decided to kill a few minutes in that music store at the moment!

You'll love the Line 6 amp.  I don't own one, but I've played on a Spider 75 watt before.  The 75 has more channels than the 15, but the 15 watt still gives you four channels plus other effects, and compared to the $80 2-channel Fender Frontman, twenty buck gets you a lot more.  Good luck pucking a guitar!
