Kenny congratulations, the first song is a hurdle and I know there are many here at chordie who have faced it including myself and I can recall the first time I got a myspace account I was worried if people would like my songs but as time went on I came to realize it was unimportant as long as I liked them and then it was youtube so you see all of these steps are just small hurdles and like all things in life you take them on one at a time because there will always be another, you should be proud of your accomplishment and I know how hard you worked to get this first song because you just about wore out my ear on googletalk lol seriously you did a great job and like anything there's always room for improvement so keep at it. smile

HI Radchael and welcome to the recording forum, before you start recording your first track make sure the monitor input is clicked on and test the volume of your input it will be displayed when you play a chord in the upper right hand side of the audacity screen (red colored moving bars) or say "testing" into the microphone adjust the slider so the red colored moving bars go as far to the right without staying a darker red (distortion of signal) then when your ready to record click the record button and follow the procedure mentioned by Roger and good luck smile

Getfiddle are you saying you were at your girlfriends place listining to tree frogs? hmmm "well I think you may be spending to much time on your computer" lol

I agree free is the way to go. This came with the sound card I bought at Guitar Center. But I do
have Audacity also and I really like it. I also have a really good sensitive set of recording mics.
So sensitive that I'm gonna have to build a sound booth just to use them. Lets just say that I set
one up at my girlfriends place and with the headphones on we heard a tree frog outside!! And the
windows were closed. That's sensitive!!

Im glad you got that sorted out and thanks for your comment on the tutorials. By the way cubebase sounds like a music editing program and as I type one of my associates is researching
cubebase he just informed me by google talk that it is made by stienberg and it is audio mastering recording software and it is not free and we are very cheap on chordie and refuse to pay for anything over $0 it is our intention to make sound recording available for everyone for nothing (or next to nothing) and my research team has furthur informed me you get cubebase LE4 with the digitec RP350 multi effects modeling processor, and the cubebase 4 additon software by itself is $199.95 thats 159.95 euro for our neighbors across the pond so Freeeeeeeeee is the way to go lol

Thank you Roger for the good information and for anyone just starting out and thinking about recording there first song and after all these years I still get a little edgy when standing in front of a microphone but that usually go's away after the first few bars and then I settle down and listen to each track and see if I can improve it. Recording is important and having a good microphone is essential but the proof in the pudding is in mixing and the more you work with different effects and how to pan tracks or bounce them the better your recording will sound and the audacity series covers a lot of these editing procedures and that is there purpose to make it easier for anyone just starting out with recording to advance there knowledge and put out a better sounding song and thanks again Roger for posting this smile

I was using martin silk n steel for over 10 yrs and I just tried a set of elixir lights so far the tone has not diminished noticeably I like the sound and feel of the silk n steel better but they do wear out quicker but i haven't given up on them I may flip flop between the elixirs and silk n steel just for variety smile

Sounds like the tunning pegs to me as Doug said they do wear out after time depending on the quality of the tunners, my gibson mandolin was made in 1898 and stays in tune you can hear it on all the recordings I use a mandolin on (most recent is the session at traxx) I would check into the cost of replacing them if you plan on playing it more smile

Today marks the second week the recording forum was opened, like anything new there will always be room for improvement but overall I am pleased with the interest members of chordie have shown towards this forum and all the helpful suggestions and ideas that have been submitted. The Audacity series of tutorials has received a lot of downloads from my mediafire account along with the collaboration on the song by jacoby jam composed by Randy and Scott (riddler and fatstrings) and several different mixes from members were passed along the net highway including Doug's and mine along with added guitar tracks from me and what has been shown is the original "Idea 2" worked and as more members learn to use the information from the audacity series there will be an increase in requests for tracks to be added, most of these request so far have been passed via Google talk where privacy and real time communication is made possible and members of chordie have seen and talked to each other for the first time using the video cam site tokbox which has allowed video conferencing between several members from all over the world and helped to bring us closer as a musical community and chordie family and in the days to come I look forward to topics and requests for help with adding tracks or mixing songs to be submitted by more members and to make this recording forum a place that is not only enjoyable but also an informative page to visit. smile

Thanks helena for the link it go's well with my mornning coffee and I have not a clue what this thread is about lol

Phil I just listened to this song, nice work it has the feel of a show tune for a musical or stage production you could orchestrate it by adding strings as counter melodies to augment the chorus or bridge kind of like a answer to the end of a phrase it would be effective, either way it is a fine song and the lyrics are crafted well (I hope im not to critical but i cant help myself) lol nuff said good song smile

Ark I wish I could have made a video of the mix down but I didn't want to distract the engineer from this crucial point of time and the entire system is run from a ordinary keyboard its like the bridge of a starship and this guy has got to be one of the fastest typist in the world he was flying on that keyboard, they never had courses like that when I went to school either the computer had not yet been invented lol I decided to record an entire cd there, they also have a graphic design department with manufacturing, distrubution and promotion which includes airplay so its the end of the yellow brick road for me and I cant wait to get back there. thanks for your comments smile

Very interesting video.
Thanks for taking the time....
I can see why the guy would need to go to college to run a system like that now if they only had courses like that when I was a School.  smile

Off hand the only one that comes to mind is Rod Stewart he was in the Jeff Beck group and on the "Truth" LP his voice was, and still is unique especially on the song "Shapes" smile
