Russell, have you installed anything new in the software department recently? It kinda sounds like you have something hanging up while loading.... most likely not a driver as from what you are describing is after all the drivers have loaded. So my guess is a file dependancy is missing a link and the application is having to "hunt" for a library in order for your desktop to load.

Re: windows 10 (70 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Greetings All! First off, I'm not a full blown certified PC Tech...... Juat a hobbist with some miles on. The first hard drive I came in contact with was the size of a top-load washing machine and would store a massive 10M of data!! processors were running @ 7MHz and "Downtown" was a mega-hit (Petula Clarke for you historians).
Amy, You are not responsible for fried main-boards, and they are not brand specific! It's not a curse, it's capacitors that either reach their end of life, or have experienced power surges over time and finally surrendered. Really! just about every one that I have had fail,or have changed out for folks had blown/overheated/swollen (pick one) capacitors on it. Storms, surges, heat, or just bad power supplies kill them.
As for SSD drives, the failure rate for them over "spinning rust" is too high vs cost to justify refitting just yet. In devices that depend on batteries, like tablets, convertables, & laptops they substantially extend battery runtime (mainly because spinning motors eat electrons). Also newer hard drives have read/write speeds that still beat the fastest SSDs, with very good reliability, and if you don't trust the one you are running, they are affordable to install a second drive and set up a "mirror" array so if the main fails everything is also on the second. External drives are great for backing up essential data and your documents/photos/music will be saved if something catastrophic happens.
If you would like to try Linux... you only need a blank 2Gb USB drive and visit the Ubuntu homepage for instructions on how to make it bootable and download the 14.04 version (that is last year's release & stable). You get the option of either installing the OS, or "test driving" it from the thumb drive without formatting or abandoning your existing OS...... bear in mind that it is always a good idea to backup your files before doing anything that you might click wrong and start a process that may lose you something!
Anyway, the Linux OS will run off the thumb drive and might be a little slower than if it was actually on your hard disk, but you can play around in it and get a feel for using the software without commitment or cost (Ubuntu is free!). It really is kinda like a cross between Mac OS and Windows with everything running in a GUI (unless you really like "command" in which case "terminal" will feel familiar....exit). All needed drivers are packed in the kernel (so you don't have to hunt them down) and it includes Firefox as default browser along with a few apps (but no "shovel-ware" ie: trial apps with nag screens etc).
Russell, BSOD? do you have the delay before or AFTER the "Windows Splash Screen"? Where it "hangs" in the sequence helps finding what kind of issue might be slowing your startup. Please Advise.

Re: windows 10 (70 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
On another note: My semi-resident computer guru (eldest son), has been running the beta as a tester for Microsoft for awhile now. He's pretty much of the opinion that 10 is not that big an improvement over 8.1 at this stage. "Ive been running it in a virtual machine because it is not stable enough to trust as a sole OS on any piece of hardware I depend on.". So that begs the question of "will it be ready by the July 29th scheduled release?" To which I get a maybe...... "give them a few months to get everything patched & we'll see".
Now I must add, that I have been a dedicated Windows user since 3.1.... the only reason I don't have it on anything other than a recently purchased notebook, is that when my mainboard died.... Windows would not validate my 7 Pro on the new rebuild. I already ran Linux on my laptop because the lower overhead increased battery run-time, and frankly does everything I was using my lapotp for as well or better than the Vista it shipped with.
There were some applications that I used on my desktop that only run in a Windows environment (at that time) and 7 Pro was a good stable horse to saddle with those kind of chores. Now I'm retired, and that nag is out to pasture (pretty much same as me)..... my "workload" has changed and I don't feel the need to hang in there with Windows running the circus. Not really comfy with the "cloud based" Office suite (365), don't really like the "subscription" business model, with little or no control over what gets put into my hardware and when (without full disclosure about what it's doing in there and why I need it in the first place). If you open your Windows Task Manager and scroll through the list of running applications and services, it's scary what all is going on in there! Then check the Commit load on your resources and ask yourself why "with 4 cores and 8 Gigs of Ram, a fifth of a terabyte of swap file space..... you can still toast marshmallows on the CPU cooler!?!" While ONLY reading the forum on Chordie.
I'm not bashing Windows here, just saying that for the things I do..... Linux just works!

Not me Dino.... but then I run linux on most of my PCs. Will have to check the portables though, they are 8.1 and arre eligible for the upgrade. That is once I charge the batteries..... not used as often I suppose. The downside of being retired and staying close to home where smaller and lighter is not a requirement.
I did hear that it was coming very soon though!

Howdy Clem, There have been lots of comments about ads interferring with page display frames. You might check this link to another discussion here on the topic and see if it works for you too, http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=27009
The ad block plus plugin seems to cure most of the problems as does holding [Shift] while reloading the page. Let us know how it goes for you.
As Dino mentioned, some revenue for supporting the site comes from paid advertising and Google has a piece of that, but there are ways around having them disrupt your ability to access the information here on Chordie.

Re: PC keyboard problem (16 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
New keyboard didn't fix it, so I would check the default keyboard layout in Windows. Qwerty is most common, but you could have changed it to Colpak, Dvorak, or some alternate that is still based on the English Language..... or not. The software allows you to assign anykey combination you like (even if it is not commonly recognized) so it's worth a look.

Hi girls and guys what is the go with all the ad, s covering search and songs all the time , real people use this to learn so why block it with some stupid ad, s some are inappropriate and just ludicrous cheers
There may be an ending for your frustration here in this thread from earlier this year, http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=26857
Another thing you might try is to hold [Shift] and click the "reload" icon on your browser. That will usually clean the ads from the page so they don't display over content.
Let us know how it works for you.

Gidday
I have a martin GPCPA 4
love it,I wanted an all wood guitar, the funny thing though i noted the
fingerboard is Richlite. So i looked up Richlite to see what it is.
It`s mashed up paper & glue!
Sounds like "Masonite"....... the stuff of "clipboards, and pegboard without the holes". Also a nightmare to re-fret as it just might be prone to chipping like the former products when run through a tablesaw.

Re: Chords won't come up. (4 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Hi Bob and a Chordie Welcome to you (see you've been around for a little over a month). Anyway I checked as well, and ..... no joy. That tune is hosted at roughstock.com, and because Chordie doesn't store any music on it's servers, we are dependent on other sites not changing stuff in order for us to get songs for you.
Don't know what's going on over there, but a quick look-see shows that they don't host tabs or chords.... but do list the lyrics (with some chords). I'm wondering if they had issues with some persons of the "legal" variety, and changed something that has rendered our link to this tune invalid.
The URL of the hosting site is displayed in your browser frame when you click on a tune in our index, so it is easy to go directly to them and see if it is still in place on that end. Our index is constantly being checked and that must be one that slipped through, or hasn't been verified recently.
Thanks for Posting the issue and again Welcome Aboard!!

Re: Now I'm Confused (26 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Have a couple of smaller shops here and both are run by genuine Luthiers..... anyway I happened by Greg's on Friday and he had just taken delivery of his new Breedlove. Now you have to know that he ordered this one from the Factory just over the mountain from us here, and 9 months ago he personally selected the wood for his new guitar. Proud he was and the tone was as close to perfect as could be, to my ear anyway, and a absolutely gorgeous instrument in all respects from the "submerged cedar" top to the matched figured Indian Rosewood back and sides.
First thing, on the bench for a setup, and the brand new EXPs into the trash! Everybody is using those strings because they get them for about a buck a set, and they are not as good as others out there.... but last a long time! I guess the point is, new instruments settle in a little after that first setup and really should get another tweaking after awhile. Most shops don't bother, and as a result you can be disappointed with what you hear/feel on first impression. Find yourself a smaller shop with a really "picky" technician in the back-room.... THEN do a comparison.

The closest one to me at the moment is Portland, at several locations. That's like a 170 mile round trip and a dose of traffic I can live without. But that does not mean that I couldn't get to gether with a few of the local atrists and the Parks Department and organize a gathering here. Might have to consider that in between other events already on my schedule for June...... could be tight but I know people!!!

You know Joe, I've been through there a few times in the last five years or so and always meant to touch bases with you in passing.... but always just "blowing through town" on the way to Phoenix or back home. So I'm gonna tenatively say I'll be there!
Personal preference is in the Fall (that part of the world gets BLAZING Hot in the summer!) and it takes awhile to adapt to the climate without "wilting" (especially us Northwest Rainforest varieties). It's ONLY about an 18 hour drive..... So I might look into flying.... or not. Gotta talk it over with the "better half" but she's a good girl who was "up" for camping in the desert for 5 months straight, winter before last. So we might make it a "family outing".

Several years back a friend had both knees done, and walked into my shop with 2 canes for assist at week #2....... visited again after playing 9 holes of golf (for the first time in over 15 years) at the end of week #6. Last time I saw him he was jogging and cursing himself for not having them done sooner. Sadly he passed away a couple of years later of a massive heart attack! Too much jogging I'm guessing.
Do what the Doc says, and don't scimp on the physical therapy (even if it hurts a little). I'd be in a wheelchair still if it wasn't for a good man with a knife and the encouragement of a very good PT staff. OK maybe a little Prayer for good measure.....

Re: New to Chordie and Novice Acoustic player (9 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Welcome to Chordie Steve! (Hoping I got your name right? correct as you prefer)
Index not working? Try learning your "open" chord shapes using the 2 3 4 fingers and let the 1 (index) have a little vacation. I'm assuming that it is fairly straight and missing the "bendy bit". Most of us had to learn how to do that later in our learning when getting into barre chords anyway, and it will make that transition easier when you explore barres as well. Major, minor, and the 7th chords are all do-able index delete..... as well as the dim chord shapes.
Bring that stiff index into play as your barre, and the whole fretboard opens up into usable "real-estate"!
Many of us are "older" and struggle with joints not working as well as we'd like, so you are sure to get lots of support from the Chordie Crowd as you go along.
Thanks for posting and introducing yourself to the Community.... Welcome Aboard! ![]()

Re: Scroll function (11 replies, posted in About Chordie)
3767.... Open the page with the song you are wanting to play/learn/?? and over on the right side of the page you should see an icon (with the transpose, print options), labled "auto-scroll" click on the icon and it should change to a series of numbers that control the speed of the scroll. Then again if you are using Windows and have a "three-button mouse", a center click should change your cursor to a dot and double arrow...... moving your mouse up or down will increase or decrease the scroll speed, and another center mouse click will restore your cursor and normal function of the mouse.
I should add that the auto scroll function on Chordie has been a bit "glitchy" recently so I would use the one native to Windows if possible.

Re: auto scroll (14 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Can someone help, I was hoping I could move songs from here into my app called songbook. In that app I can do so much, cut and paste, transpose, and auto scroll, but looks like I can't, so how do I auto scroll here and is it possible to make adjustments to the song?
We have a few members that are using Onsong for that and it is covered fairly well in this link: http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=27344
As for the Songbook App, sorry I'm not familiar with it, but as with Onsong, the trick was to check the help files on the Software website and as each app is different it should be covered there. Then again perhaps we have a member also using the app and can advise you directly.

Re: Martin Litigation (8 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Yup, it takes all kinds. "I don't know anything about wood" drove the final nail to the case in my mind..... the "crack that goes all the way to the inside, is likely a slight variation in the grain color of the side. Ebony has some slight variation in color as well and it's common practice to "apply stain" to give more consistent "blackness" to it, so a little rubbing off on a polishing cloth is not unexpected.
Martin verified the serial number and production date of the guitar..... so it is a Genuine Martin, not some $600 "Australian copy".
Get out of my Courtroom, and get a life! Good for a laugh though.
