You know you're a musician when selling your car, giving away your motorcycle and leaving all your friends and family behind are just bearable...as long as you have your guitar.

Lol, was thinking back listening to "Tones of home" and recalling some of the wacky things I went thru back home.
Just thought I'd share and give some friday humor.

Now I grew up in one of the rough sections of the Bronx, Ny. People constantly checked out for stupid mundane things like looking at someone else wrong or mistaken identity.
So...I'm 18 and sitting in Dunkin Donuts one morning thinking how awesome it is that I can have a nice quiet breakfast in my favorite place without anyone else around causing trouble  and enjoy my morning before my skating comp later that afternoon.
I'm sitting there eating and enjoying myself when two white young men in trenchcoats, terminator shades, briefcases and mean faces show up at both of the exits for the small restaurant. Immediately, I'm thinking "Oh crap...this is some mafia crap and I'm sitting in the middle of it!!"  yikes sad The two trenchcoat-mafia guys are staring at each other like they've been enemies for years when they both open the doors at the same time and come in. The guy behind the counter and me are looking at each other like "Are you gonna run? Cause I'm about to!
The two trenchcoat-mafia guys walk up to each other growling and getting in each other's faces and shoving each other with their briefcases and start yelling at each other. At this point I had grabbed my sandwich and left my coffee and started inching my way towards the door closest to me. The two trenchcoat-mafia guys walk over to the larger table in the restaurant while yelling at each other and...

*BAM*...*BAM*

I hit the floor. Dropped my sandwich all over the place and screaming like a nut started belly-crawling the rest of the way to the door while looking back to see what was going on.

The two trenchcoat-mafia guys must have slammed their briefcases down on the table ultra-hard (thats what made the shot sounds) and were opening them up and slamming down cards while yelling something at each other. In my panic I was still curious enough to find out what the hell was going on and the guy behind the counter had long gone into the backroom and I'm guessing out the back door. I got up from the floor and watched them for a few seconds yelling at each other about these dang cards and what they were doing. From looking at the cards from a distance they looked like tarot cards or something. Either way, I got the hell outta there before they pulled uzis out of those briefcases.

When I got home and asked around, I found out that they were playing a "Magic: The Gathering" Card game.
::)

I never went back to that Dunkin Donuts.

I've been there before.
Actually most of my playing time...lol.
Things still get that way sometimes, but I started to feel better when I played with others.
I take my guitar everywhere I go because I still don't know exactly what I'm doing.
I would jam twice a week with the employees at the local guitar stores, they are easy access because thats their job and they can't run away.
I'd also get together with Zurf from here to jam at least once a year (lol).
And I don't get out much either, my usual routine is "work -> church -> home" so if I can't get some playing in during one of those three..it doesn't happen. Luckily lunch breaks and long work days afford the opportunity to get some jamming in.

Scales are essential for playing lead guitar. There are many different types of scales and I'm no authority on all of them.
I stick to the extended major and minor pentatonic and the Phrygian scales myself. I don't have a daily use for the rest of the scales when I play.

Oh yeah, once you know your guitar scales (or a few of them) you can transfer that knowledge over to the BASS Guitar!!
So learning it for the guitar really gives you the benefit of two-in-one!!

Hey everyone!

The gig went GREAT!! Once I got up there and let the keyboardist intro the song the adrenaline kicked in and I couldn't feel any sickness at all. In fact, my nose didn't start running until the break. Then I ran to the bathroom real quick and took some cold medicine for the second half. 4 hours and I made more than I make at my day job in that time!

Everyone was so friendly to the band too! It's like everyone wants to talk to you and find out about you and compliment you. I had a bunch of people ask me about my guitar and if I was available for other things. I about said yes to everyone and passed my number out like it was going out of style.

I could reeeeeeeally get used to this.

Greetings!

Today I had the fortune of being blessed with not one but TWO Rogue analog pedals.

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/2753/latestpedalcaseshot.th.jpg

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The first is the "ROGUE ANALOG DELAY". I have been using a Behringer DD-100. I didn't know how digital it was until I actually heard some analog delay pedals on this forum and then on youtube. The Rogue Analog Delay pedal is the exact opposite of the DD-100 in that it has the nice warm repeats that analog delay pedals offer. The package is literally the same size as an MXR pedal and built tough. I have been able to more accurately dial in the delay sounds that I need using the Rogue because even though it has less knobs, it's much more accurate in it's levels, timing and repeats. Compared to the Rogue Delay, the DD-100 was all over the place! I was able to tweak the Rogue Delay much more and find multiple settings that were usable with different backing tracks I experimented with. I take it out live tonight at the "M.I.H. COGIC Mens Conference" and i'm sure it will fit in the mix MUCH better.

The next pedal is the "ROGUE VINTAGE COMPRESSOR". Now I have to say that I never have tried a compressor pedal before and I really had no idea what they did. Because this pedal was a surprise I had no idea what to expect. In my experimentation I found that a compressor pedal (this one...lol) reins in your sound and also boosts it.
What I mean is that you set the "Attack" level (How fast the pedal reins in the sound levels and compresses it), then set the "Sustain" level (How much the pedal stretches out the notes until you release them) and then set the "Level" (Overall sound level maintained by the pedal when you play soft or hard). I had no idea that these compressor pedals were so dynamic!!! When I set it up, I clicked it on and strummed softly....it raised the level of my soft playing up to the level set by the level knob! When I strummed hard it lowered the output of my playing down the the level set by the level knob!!

It's like having your own sound guy in your pedalcase!!!  I could wail on the guitar and there werent any loud notes jumping out to sound out of control! And when I played softly it regulated the notes to all be at the same output level. I could even kick up my guitar volume, pick hard and get a nice broken up bluesy crunch from my MHP GM BD-2 without the volume blowing out my ears or even increasing. Tweaking the sustain knob does increase noise  when you turn it past 2:00 but boy-o-boy does it stretch out the notes. I felt like an 80's rock star just holding notes for 10 seconds and making my "rock-out" squishy-face the whole time. My son was looking at me like i had lost my mind...

I am definitely going to have a LOT of fun with this compressor pedal. This is an exciting new find. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions regarding Compressors?

Last but certainly not least...
To the awesome brother that blessed me, thank you so much.

I find out on tuesday that I have my first PAYING gig this friday night.
So I have been practicing my licks and songs and chops and everything and I'm feeling like I'm READY!

Today I come back from lunch (practicing more) and someone has jacked up the air conditioning and I CANNOT get it to shut off or warm up. So I'm fooling with this thing and going back to my desk and freezing my bones off...going back and forth and nothing is changing.

*GRRR*

So I go to the utility closet and get the ladder and cover the vent with paper, tape and plastic.
I sit down to my nice warm cubicle and .......

.
ACHOO!!!
*Sniffle*

I'm officially sick...

*Double GRRRRR*

!@#$!@#$!#@!
Hell, high water or cold medicine...I'M GOING TO THAT GIG!!!!

Yeeeep, that is how I was introduced to it.
Some of my friends were smoking out in an abandoned house's livingroom after a skate comp we were in earlier. After changing out of my gear and taking a shower I met up with them at the abandoned house.

When I walked in, the room was thick with smoke. It smelled good (better than horrible cigarettes) so I hung out for a little while.
Then the giddiness hit me. They knew I caught contact by the way I was laughing.
We all decided to celebrate by getting some St ides Special Brews and going for a walk around the neighborhood.

good times back in the old days.
*sigh*

I like both.
Luckily, my electric is so resonant in the body and neck that I rarely ever pick up my acoustic guitar anymore.
I've been blessed to have one that does it all.

And yes, that sounded soooo unlike electric when he played it. Absolutely amazing. I haven't figured out all of the chords....especially where he drops down to F# and F. The stretched chord he plays after them looks like a jazz chord.

The last one is just a first fret E, but at the second fret.
