Okay.... I will admit that my interest is peaked....
Of the bunch Carey has the hutzpah to be a fit in a "Stooges" role... the others will be a leap of faith.  I might tune in when it makes it to network distribution, but I am not hopeful that the script will be worth the $6.00 a ticket will buy.

Granted the cast is made up of all good actors.... so I would think that the roles could be recreated with honesty and tribute to the talents they represent.

Having said that, it becomes the task of the writers to come up with a story line and dialogue/action to support those roles.  Sadly I just doubt that there are many writers with the "feel for slapstick comedy" out there, as that style of humour has been replaced in our times by degradation and insensitivity.  The Stooges were funny because they were talented enough to pull it off at a time when the world needed a belly laugh, and didn't have to actually belittle anyone to do it.  Their humour was harmless not heartless.

Just my tuppence.

As for the Earth Hour....  We turned off all lighting and lit candles.  It was very nice, except I had to open all the doors to let the random array of scents out in order to breathe!  I'm thinking that my "carbon footprint" for reheating outweighed the benefit of dousing lights.... but I'm not sure.  Our Power is hydroelectric, and heating is Natural Gas.... both fairly "clean" but of the two Hydro wins in the battle for environmental sustainability.

Everything is converted to CF Lighting so our full load illumination draw is around 150 Watts, but still have way too many computers running to make a huge difference.  It can be surprising what technology requirements can add up to!  Still trying to convince the "kids" that switches are bi-directional devices, and turn off as easily as on.

I still am of the opinion that if we all refused to buy motor fuel of any kind for one week, and just got by on what we had in the tank.... somebody would notice!

Conserve where you can, share what you can, and we'll all come through this together.

Howdy Toney,

I've been led to understand that if you do not allow others to cough or sneeze into your microphone, you can avoid getting viruses also.  As in all things good personal care and a reasonable diet can go a long way!  Update your anti-virus software and you'll be fine.... well unless you already have something lurking in there waiting for a weak moment.

My eldest boy is a Tech in IT... and around their office is a saying worth repeating at the risk of offending (for which I will apologise now)  "There is no such thing as FREE Internet Porn!".  Just a caution for any that might read this....  good judgement prevails.

Hi Micky,

Here is a link to one of my favorites....  www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation?q=Ovation
Ovation has been around awhile and are durable, not too expensive, and well made.  The shallow bodied models do not have as much bass acoustically as the deeper sizes, but the on board preamp allows you to compensate when plugged in.  Also incorporates a chromatic tuner, and I really am fond of mine.  Deals nicely with fingerpicking and has enough "bite" to rock hard in the veins of a solidbody axe.

Play everything before you buy, and good hunting!

Hi Jerome,

You and I likely wouldn't hear the difference.... wrong gender!  We males cannot recognize very low and very high frequencies well anyway, and it gets worse with age.  The ladies on the other hand have a wider range of hearing than us and maybe that's why my wife says I sing like crap, when I think otherwise. LOL

In most cases the low response won't hamper you on stage as monitors go, in the studio though I tend to favor a quality headset that has a very precise frequency response and good noise damping for use while mixing.  They can get spendy too, but don't take the beating a pair of monitors will hauling in and out of the van.... just hang on the hook until really needed.

Well Howdy "newbies"  and along with Ken I would like to Welcome you to Chordie!

It is absolutely a personal choice as to if a particular instrument is or is not well suited to your kind of music, and brand loyalty is great to a point.... but....

Gibson guitars made overseas are labeled Epiphone and sound really close to their American Made counterparts for a whole bunch less $$$.  Some Martins are built outside the boarders and sound good, but IMO the quality has slipped a bit over the years when compared to other brands out there that you don't have to mortgage the farm for.  Don't let a label and price-point make decisions for you, play everything, and when you find the one that really does it for you... that's the one you take home to meet "momma".

Welcome again &

Hi you guys,  and seeing as how you are all new at posting (sort of) Welcome Aboard!

Actorcam, how is things in the South Bay Area?  Grew up in Torrance myself... attended West High.

xxCurtisxx, Did you get together with the OCTA driver and do anything?

Sometimes I wish I was still down there where there is sunshine and warm surf most of the year.  Mostly with all the people and a good freeway system, it seems to me that getting a band together would be a bunch easier than out here on the edge of civilization.

Used to fish the pier there at Redondo... now I gotta drive an hour to smell the surf.... not to say that there is no good surfing in Oregon.... some/many areas are outstanding!  But you gotta have a full wetsuit or you'll freeze something off getting out to the breakers.

Hope you guys get something together down there, and once again welcome.

Howdy Nascarfan, and welcome to Chordie as a new poster!

Somewhere around here there are a pea-pot of bluegrass pickers I'm sure, who will step up and direct you in the right course.
Sorry to say that although I enjoy the genre, it isn't my forte.... although I am pretty sure I couldn't keep up at half speed even.
For specific info about scales and theory I would sure want to ask over in the Theory section... seems to me that Jerome does quite a bit of country and bluegrass as part of his normal gig.

Good hunting, and onced again welcome aboard!

Hi Deaken316,

How long do you want those strings to last?  You might try Elixers, or EXPs,  but there are a lot of very good strings out there depending on how much you are willing to spend.  The Elixers are very good (good and expensive) but last long enough to make them a good investment if you are not into breaking them and changing often.  If you are tough on strings, then go away from the coated strings which you might have a tendency to shred the covers off of.  Ernie Ball, Fender, GHS, D'Addario, Walmart, any of those will do if you change regularly at about $6.00 per set on sale.  Keep in mind that the less you spend, the sooner they will go flat for keeps under heavy bends, but your mileage may vary.

Personally I play Elixers on everything and buy sets by the dozen when they are deeply discounted.  Like dried foods they seem to have a good shelf life in unopened packages.

I have to mostly agree with Russell on this.... Chorus for sure and a bit of reverb, but not too much of either.  Just enough presence to give that early reflection kind of depth. Not to sure about the trem though, to me it sounded pretty "clean", just with more presence... if that makes sense.  I'd try to recreate it but my amp and effects are elsewhere at the moment cooling down from the Sunday Jam Session.

Dude.... hate it when that happens!

I think you are going to find that sometimes the magic just doesn't work, and there is really no single cause, or remedy.  Might as well just give it up, sell the darn thing and take up knitting! (just kidding.... really!)

From time to time it happens, don't let it get you down or it might get worse from the worry.  I play 3 to 4 hours daily, something like 20 minutes at a stretch and then take a bit off to stretch out and relax... you might be too "tight" and need to break up your regime a little.  Make sure that you have properly warmed up and have all the hinges in your paws moving freely, run a few scales, work out positions for a couple new chord variations and changes.... then open your music book at some random page and play whatever is facing you.  It will pass as all things do, so don't lose heart.

Good One Nela!

But really I think a 12 guage slug-gun is a required component of your tackle out on the Penninsula.  Personally I favor a 44 Mag 4" (don't beat your leg to death over a days walking) and is quicker to hand if needed.  My bush pilot buddy Roger Adams likes a 454Casull... but it is just a matter of taste.  Keep a sharp eye out and don't trust a guide that just dumps you off on the middle of anywhere and says "I'll be back by sundown".  My wife's uncle had to spend an entire winter up on the North Slope because the weather kept his pilot from being able to make their rendezvous.  Yes he did live to tell the tale, but died of mercury poisoning from drinking from a stream below an old gold mining operation.

Good Fishin' but be safe out there!

Haircut?  What is that?

Shoot haven't seen a barber in five years anyway... well except for Steve, a friend/bandleader who cuts hair for his "day job".
Gave it up for lent one year and now it is to the point it is truly "self trimming"... conditioner is for the ladies you know.  The church used to "draft" me for the role of Jesus around Christmas, but now I just put on a robe and sandals and wander the shopping malls to remind folks of the Reason for The Season.

Well, at least in my small town there are a number of pubs and coffee houses that have jam and "open mic" nights.  Usually if you participate you will find/meet someone who shares your taste in music and you stand a pretty good chance of getting together in another venue for sharing music.  This is a college town and there are a lot of folks in and out who are looking for friends so it is not too difficult to meet people.  An open bench on a sunny day near campus and voila jam session!

Good luck.... they're out there!

Hi 06sc500,

Russell's got the right idea, and that is how we have sent tracks to and fro in the past with much success.  Naturally you will want to use the file format that allows the best audio reproduction at the other end, which is why we tend to use the Mediafire option.  Mediafire does not have the filesize limits that most e-mail accounts have so the lossless formats such as FLAC and WAV are more easily sent.  MP3 is compressed but sometimes there is some difference in the quality of the track after compression into that filetype.  Personally I like FLAC and Audacity and most other recording software will be able to import/export in that file format.  Optimal is WAV as it has no loss in quality, but the file sizes get very large.... 20MB and larger depending on the amount of data the track requires for rendering.

Good Luck and have fun with it!  As always if you need information, this is the place to come to with your questions.

Greetings Booga,

Jazz is cool and there are lots of good suggestions here to get you on your way.
Check out Justinguitar also for helpful tutorials on the subject and look for a copy of the New Big Jazz Guitar Book of Jazz Standards in your local library.  Most times if your branch has a copy, it is hidden among all the dry reference books that nobody bothers to cruise through.

Well worth a look see...

Hi Gerald, I would have thought someone would have chimed in with a guess about your phantom squeal.  Sorry I didn't get back here earlier.

That said, here is my guess although there are more than one possible causes for the sounds you are experiencing.  One could be a weak or absent ground on your power cable or the wall plug you are sourcing.  You could be getting a static charge built up on the chassis which is causing the pop and sometimes slapping the thing you could be discharging it through your body.  The other possibility that comes to mind is a failing component such as a capacitor or valve reaching saturation and squealing.  If it was a valve (tube for us yanks) making poor contact in a socket, then knocking it around may temporarily correct the problem.  But it will show up again on next heat up or cool down cycle.  Either way it should likely go to a professional as finger-poking around the innards of those things can result in a mild zap, or at worst zapped dead!  It can be surprising how big a bite a charged capacitor can inflict.... they are not large, but neither is a blasting cap and you can lose a hand to one of those.

Howdy deadstring,

Actually Mediafire is intended as an upload/download vehicle to allow the transmission of files that exceed the limits of normal email servers.  With the ability to provide private links and access passwords to the files you send up to Mediafire, it makes it a good place to "park" documents or files that you might have to access while on the road without carrying copies on your laptop.  But to answer your question more precisely... I don't think that the administration has any limits as to the type of content you put there.  They do have a "hold harmless" clause in the service agreement that you agree to when opening an account with them.  With that said you are in control and hold liability should anyone care to challenge your rights to files placed there.

Heard a good joke the other day though:

How many Lawyer jokes are there?
Only three..... the other stories are all true!
