I'm with SouthPaw and Zurf.
The one thing that has consistently taken my playing to another level was playing with other musicians. When I started, I thought was making pretty good progress but I was always playing by myself. After a while, I felt like I was stuck in a box with my playing. Then I decided to search music forums for people looking for others to play with. I met a couple of cool people who I began to jam with regularly, and every session with them was an eye-opener. We also met a whole bunch of musicians in the parks where we would meet to jam or at jam/open mic nights in pubs and cafes. I've learned so much from each of the people I had the pleasure of sharing musical ideas with, no matter what "level" they were. From soloing technique and music theory from a rock guitarist or latin rhythms from percussion players, there has always been something new to explore.
Also, I think that, in order to really appreciate these experiences, you have to keep an open mind and be humble. Sometimes, you might look at a musician playing their instrument and think "I'm better than that, for sure!". But, if you actually start talking to/jamming with them you'll discover that there is something in their music that's unique and that you couldn't see at a first glance. It really pays to be open-minded.
The circle of fifths is the only tattoo I've ever considered. I'd put it on the inside of my left forearm. Permanent cheat sheet.
And Russ, as far as chord progressions go...

It's only funny 'cause it's true.
LOL That was classic!! Thanks for the link ![]()
Well, diminished chords are weird. If you consider the inversions, there is really only four of them. I sat through a workshop with a bunch of freaky jazz guys once and they spent a lot of time on it. They'd break out some crazy stuff, and noodle all day, because the scale simple doesn't resolve anywhere.
It's just bizzare, but when it's done right, I like it.
I've just recently gotten into modes. I find Locrian is a good tension builder until you want to resolve back to the root. It makes the music feel like you're building up to something but not quite getting there.
Doc,
Have you heard Ray Lamontagne? Great singer/songwriter and he's relatively new. Check him out on youtube. My favorites from him are "Jolene", "Empty", and "Shelter". Great Lyrics and great voice.
Great! Thanks for your replies and advice. I'll check out the different suggestions.
Hi Chordians,
I recently got a 4-track midi interface to plug in my instruments into my computer. Before that, I was simply using a cheap usb microphone and Audacity to record myself. It was more for educational purposes and practicing (making jam tracks, reviewing my timing, etc..) rather than trying to record arranged music. Now, I want to get more into recording actual music.
I was wondering if there was a way that I could add effects to my guitar and mics in real-time while I record, rather than adding them after I've recorded, using Audacity. What I'd like is to be able hear the playback from my guitar or vocals as I'm playing with the effects that I'm looking for (crucial for recording electric guitar and doing vocal harmonies). This would be helpful to me when I layer different tracks so that I can hear if what I'm doing fits with what's already been laid down previously.
I'd also like to be able to use my computer as a amp if that kind of software exists. I do have an amp, but it's kind of loud when I want to play late at night. Also, I was hoping that there was some kind of effects processor software that could emulate the same sounds given from pedals (reverb, chorus, wah wah).
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Hey Chordians,
Just discovered this band. They have a great sound & nice reggae feeling in their music. Apparently, they're on the rise on the world stage.
DMB is always a treat to watch / listen to. I've been a big fan for several years now. The mix of different styles blended with their talents makes for an amazing band.
They're coming to my city in a week and I already have my tickets
. It's good to know that I can expect a good show.
Melt with you - Modern English (typical 80s lol)
and if you can nail this one:
Billie Jean - Micheal Jackson
I agree with the statements above but, maybe there was also more to write about back then...
If we look back into the 60s and 70s, it seems that there was so much going on back then. People were fighting for their rights (women's rights, also a presence of racial segregation), there was war (Vietnam), and there were new and more liberated mentalities and ideals that were spreading (hippy movement, peace manifestations). And more importantly, these were issues that were part of every day life for the artists. These different events were happening right where they lived. They felt these experiences first-hand and, of course, they were major influences on the artists' lives. I think that this inspired them more to express an important message that they felt that everyone should hear.
This isn't to say that nothing major is happening today. All the things that I mentioned above still apply but in other parts of the world. But that distance from home makes us more disconnected, especially considering how media companies tend to manipulate the content that we view about these events. There is still war, racism, and injustice but it's much harder to see from our little bubble. So that tends to limit us...
Maybe this kind of music is still being written today and it isn't as accessible as easily to us...
Sidenote: This is a video of an organisation called Playing for Change which helps communities around the world by gathering musicians and making music in order to raise funds for them. They have very good videos and they promote the "old-school" ideals. Notice they use songs from the time periods we've mentioned ![]()
Tres joli poeme, Doc. Il merite vraiment d'etre transforme en chanson. C'est rafraichissant de voir des compositions en d'autres langues qui sont aussi belles. J'espere que vous allez continuer de les mettre sur le forum.
I'm really stumped on this one. I'm a fan of MMA and I'm extremely impressed at Maynard's drive and desire to overcome his disability. I also think that it's a good thing that the UFC is trying to let him live out his dream. But, at the same time, I think that his opponents can't take the fights seriously, and it shows in the youtube video. The other fighter had many opportunities to attack but seemed hesitant. This doesn't do much for the sport and its entertainment value.
Of course, the opponent could also be hesitant because, without arms or legs to hold on to, it's much more difficult to grapple against Maynard...
I think this is a great idea and, considering the amount of participation in the Songwriting Forum, I'm sure many would agree. We're lucky to have several people in the forums (SouthPaw, Roger Guppy, All1Song, Phil Williams, Old Doll, etc...) that have proven their great singing abilities and unique voices.
Singing is probably the hardest thing to do for me, and I could really use some tips. The voice is a very flexible "instrument" and also the hardest to use in my opinion. There's a lot to keep track of (posture, diaphragm, tonal recognition)... Also, I remember UpYerKilt mentioning an experience with throat nodules and explaining how you can damage your voice with improper technique.
I second Kajima's request.
Hi Ken,
My songbooks are back to normal again. Thanks for replying.

Hello Admins,
I had an error while trying to access my personal songbooks today:
Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: Unable to save result set in /var/www/chordie/include/functions.inc on line 359
mySql reports: Got error 12 from storage engine
I was simply wondering if this was a temporary error due to website maintenance or if it's something more problematic. Please advise when possible.
And sorry to disagree with you Zurf ( again)but although I was a tennis player back in the McEnroe, Connors, Borg days, I do not know one single person who plays tennis, or watches it on TV today. Maybe I'm just sheltered in my paths of travel but I see dozens of tennis courts down here in sunny Florida and every one of them are empty, unless skateboarders are shreddin' on 'em.................
M.M.A.!!! Watch it, you'll dig it...
That's dissapointing to hear. If I remember correctly, Tennis used to be a big thing in Florida. A lot of pro tennis academies (Nick Bolletierri, Van Gophy) in Ft. Lauderdale were very recognized. I also remember that when I played the juniors, some of the biggest ATP satellite tournaments were in Florida as well. But, I'm from an earlier generation (Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, etc...) just like you.
MMA is definitely something to watch. I like Anderson Silva and George St-Pierre in UFC.
Hey Detman,
Looks like everyone has given you some great advice on the subject you raised. I think a lot of people have gotten their fair share of disappointment when trying to group with others to play music. I'm guessing it can sometimes be hard to find like-minded people. Either that, or egos get in the way. I've found that too many people are over-confident that they're going to become rockstars, and they miss the point of the collaboration.
When I began playing again and felt ready to start jamming with others, I visited two places on the net where I could potentially find other players: 1 was a musical forum for my city, and the other was craigslist.com. Both sites had sections for musicians seeking like-minded players for various projects. I was looking for something less serious, and more focused on having fun and being creative. I eventually found 2 great guitarists, started jamming, and have been having fun ever since.
After we had gotten good enough (in our heads lol) to try some open mics together at cafes and bars, the opportunities to find other jammers multiplied again. These open mics can be a haven for musicians of all ages who are seeking to show their music and express themselves. After getting to know some of them, I now find myself trying hard to find time to keep up with all the jams. Also, we often meet at parks during the summer, and when people hear our jam, they also join if they have their instruments. I remember several afternoons that were spent jamming with a group of 30 other people of all ages, playing all kinds of different instruments.
Of course, there will be those that you encounter who are either arrogant, selfish, or deluded with ambitions that even they cannot live up to. I've had my share of them, and also those that weren't like that, but that I didn't share a musical connection with. Sometimes, it is easier to play by yourself, but I would recommend not giving up on trying to share making music with others. It's both fun and an enormously insightful learning experience.
In any case, I hope you find what you're looking for. The websites (check your local craigslist and musicians' forums) and open mics really worked for me.
Good luck and good jamming.

Isn't this drink also known as a "Grog"? or is that something else?
Hi tine
I dont know what age you are but I swear by "hot toddies" a home made recipe made with whisky.......now before you think I drink it to forget how bad I feel with a cold or flu, it does not get you drunk.
One measure of whisky ( 25ml)
boiling water(50ml)
one teaspoon of honey ( or sugar if no honey but honey is better for relieving a sore throat)
one cinnamon stick ( take out before drinking)they are sometimes hard to drink as the vapours are quite overpowering to the nasal passages but they work for me. I can only handle one a night when feeling ill so I usually take it about half hour before bed.
Ken
Kajima, that's very impressive.
I used to practice Kyudo (japanese style archery). Archery is definitely a demanding activity in terms of focus and discipline.
It's interesting to see how Chordians often practice another activity besides music that require a lot of the same qualities (patience, discipline, logic, creativity,... ). I've seen a lot of posts in the Chat Corner where people talk about fishing, cycling, gardening, art, and many other hobbies that aren't so easily approached by everyone...
Great song with a good message ("Roll on"). I find that we tend to focus on the "what ifs" in Life far too often instead of appreciating the positive things in our lives.
I especially like the phrase "Life is just a journey". Reminds me of the saying: "Life is about the journey, not the destination".
Great writing. I hope we can hear a recording soon.

So we're at "K"?
Kings of Convenience - Gold in the air of Summer
Ken -"One In A Million" by Guns n Roses
Badeye - "Working Man" by Rita MacNeil
How about: 'Like a river flows surely to the sea'
Elvis Presley - Can't help falling in love

I had issues with other site too with IE. I have not had any problems with Firefox so it works for me. To each their own. Maybe it will magically go away. LOL
A really good alternative to Firefox and (especially) IE is Google Chrome. I started using this browser the day it came out and haven't stopped since. Nifty little thing...
lol. It's possible that he's influenced by Willie, but I don't think Glen Hansard is "trying" to be like anyone. I actually find his music quite unique. In an interview, he mentioned that his Irish roots and Celtic music had a big influence on his own compositions. I think that hole in his Tak is just a result of his crazy strumming and not wanting to change because he likes the sound of it.
