Wow, the first three responses were really not what I was expecting. I honestly thought I was going to get a big push on online places. KAP54, I have seen some youtube vids and there are some good ones but the camera shots are usually not real detailed. I guess my biggest concern right not is cost. I can get about a month of online tutoring for the price of about 1 hour in person lesson. Also, has anyone find that you get more pigeon holed into playing like your teacher plays. For everyone who takes in person lessons, how many times a week do you take?

Topic: In person lessons or online lessons? (8 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I am looking for people experiences on taking lessons online or from a in person teacher. I have reviewed Jam.com and some other online offers but have a real good player who plays in my church who has the same styling that I am looking for. However I am looking at about $30/lesson (not sure how many times I need to go in a month). I like playing simple campfire songs with county and blues influence. I am also a fan of Jason Mraz, Brandi Carlile and such. I want to learn to finger pick a little instead of just plain chord strumming. I also just play acoustic so I am not looking for any all in one sites but have been leaning towards the Acoustic Guitar.com site. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Anybody know the chords to "I'll sing a love song to you" by Candi Staton? Or a chord and progression. I am looking for a starting point.

If I have a song that I like but I want to change the chords to go down a step, I transpose that as a -1 on the Chordie page. But is that really possible to play if the original song is not capo'd anywhere? Or is that for something that starts with the Capo on the 4th fret and you move it down?

Zurf- that is just full circle. Back in the 70's it was just called Outlaw Country. Never doing it the way Nashville wants it done. I agree with you though that Trigger should be at the Smithsonian

I was thinking this morning about Willie Nelson's guitar trigger. Probably one of the most famous acoustical in the world. Now when Willie retires and ol' trigger is put to rest where would you like to see him displayed, if at all? Willie Nelson museum? Country Music Hall of Fame? or the Smithsonian?
Just a light-hearted topic to ponder a simple issue

Re: Guitar set up (18 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Okay, I have been reading this topic with great interest, however I have a question. Since all guitars "feel" different (Taylor vs. Martin vs. Washburn) how does one know how they like their action set. What i mean is that if I play my dad's Martin who has a high action and I like it but then play my Washburn with a lower action and I like it, how am I ever going to understand what is the perfect feel for me? Is there a way that I could tell if loweing it by .25 cm will be better? or to raise it? I don't know if there is a right or wrong answer but curious on how others have figured it out.

Re: For One Hour (5 replies, posted in Poems)
Thanks Phil. It started out as a kind of forbidden love song. Like the person doesn't know his feelings. But I agree it does sound a little goofy. It is about one beat shorter that what I had but I will try it and see if I can get it to fit.

Thank you both. Russel-this might actually need to move to another section but to respond to what you mentioned about the strings and the setup of the guitar. I was talking to my dad, who plays also, about this same thing last night. He said that it is mostly what feels write for you. But for a beginner is there a setup that needs to be done. Is it better to have a lower action because it is easier or a higher. Strings? I have not idea. I just play what was on the guitar when I got it.

Re: For One Hour (5 replies, posted in Poems)
Thank you doll. I actually did a sample recording once prior to reading about Audacity and doing it on separate tracks. I did it all in one take. Kind of messy but it was my first time. Have to learn to walk first. Trying to work on it again. Maybe one day it will be good enough to post

Re: live (6 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Depends on what you mean as playing live. I first started playing my son's 3/4 guitar in about February and I took it along when we went camping with friends in May. I found some easy chord songs on Chordie (obvious ones that I knew) and it was fun. It is easier to play with someone else when you begin, as you can watch them and follow or if you mess up somewhere it gets a little hidden by the other.

My dad plays and he has a broken tendon from a childhood accident that prevents him from bending his middle finger on his strumming hand. Sadly enough he was not allowed to play in Church ;-)

Re: Double Chords? (23 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I think the ring middle pinky for an A would be a good alternative. I do the A with just my index and middle. Maybe that is my beginning of a baby barr.

Russel:
Listened to you song on YouTube. Very nice. Great feeling. I do have to agree with Zurf on the "B' chord. Those Barr chords are going to be my nemsis.

Re: If I had a bucket and shovel (7 replies, posted in Poems)
Thanks Russell. That sounds like a great start to get me going. Unfortunately will probably end up liking some crazy chords or barr chords which I haven't learned yet. :-) But I suppose that gives me more encouragement to learn them

Re: Double Chords? (23 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I have played a 3/4 country beat like that (My Heroes have always been Cowboys), bass first and then the chord. I am also going to try Russell's version and see how it sounds. Might be a new hidden sound for me.

I am better at writing than composing music. Add my name; be happy to help where can. I tend to lean towards country, ballads, pop. Anything where you have the words mean something.

Re: Double Chords? (23 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Okay, that makes sense. I will try it on the song and see if it sounds like it is suppose to. Is the bass note and the cord played at the the same time or is a fingering on the bass and then strum the chord?

I have seen in a couple of songs where they have chords written like C/G or similar. What does that mean. Is it that you can play either one or is it some kind of combination of both?

I found a site that has easy tabs on it. It is at http://www.guitarmasta.net
Anyway, I found two that really helped me understand tabs better. One was Hey there Delilah (for beginners) and the other was the Star Spangled Banner. They were both easy to play and really turned the light on for me to understand how to read and play tabs.
