EB I like old Queen Liz I think she does a real good job. I am not much of a Royal watcher so I am not really up with the play when it comes to Harry and Megan and Harry and Willy.
I think William will be a credit to the royal family as he seems to handle things well in public. Maybe Harry and Megan are now going to be the next Kardashians making a living as so, called reality celebrities. I cant be bothered following all this modern celeb stuff. When I was younger I was always following the Beatle sagas with John and Yoko, Paul and Linda so maybe its just me being and old codger.

I have a 16 year old granddaughter who is hoping to join the army soon. While she waits, she is doing three jobs, I think that's wonderful, when you see other kids stuck in their phones or on X box or somesuch.
Good one Phill your granddaughter with her work ethic will have a good future.

Excellent strong lyrics Beamer. I always find it hard when things or issues are black and white once politics enters it things start to develop shades of grey. A bit like an onion once you start pealing it there are different layers. Politics in what should be simple start to muddy the water.

Cheers Jim I have noticed that me me mentality and life its all about money with many of the young ones. I have wondered in recent times if the kids today are living in the real world or the cyber world? I live close to a high school and I notice kids on their way to and from school more focused on their smart phones instead of what is going on around them.

Re: Old Lady Cries (7 replies, posted in Poems)
Cheers Phill
I'm glad you got my satire in the poem in hindsight after writing it does open up a discussion about big business. . It was a stormy wet day when I wrote this more along the lines of a Cat Stevens, “Father And Son” in this case mother and son giving voice to both viewpoints his and hers. When I turned sixty I went from being very employable to no one wanting me. I applied for over 180 jobs to finally getting offered one working for our dysfunctional city council a job I hated but I took on as it was all I could get. I worked with some wonderful people there but the political management was shocking. Doing that job at times I got a lot of flak making me at times look like I had thrown away my moral sword. I hadn’t thrown away my moral sword but I had to deal with issues created by the council which were wrong. People would see me as part of the problem because of problems our council had created. Though I wrote this not thinking of that on reflection it does cover that a bit. Reading what I’ve written now it does highlight how a young person with a family could have moral conflicts over earning and doing what is right so if that opens up that discussion that is good. I guess all corporates around the worlds have an ability for good and bad so that discussion can enter moral realms of right and wrong. Here in NZ now there is heated debate over the ownership of our national sport Rugby Union. There are two camps around the commercial side and funding of Rugby. The executive wants to sell 12.5 % stake of Rugby commercial rights to a big company called Silver Lake. Under the Silver Lake deal NZR would set up a company called Commercial Co which would own NZR's commercial rights. Silver Lake would take a 12.5 stake in this for $390 million .The rugby unions Players Association (NZRPA) is opposed to deal, saying the numbers don't add up and that selling off 12.5 percent in perpetuity doesn't make financial sense, leading to a bitter dispute between the two parties. The NZRPA agrees the game needs a substantial cash injection and along with investment company Forysth Barr are proposing a public share float which it estimates could raise $190 million. NZR has rejected a public share float believing it would only appeal to 'mum and dad' investors and doesn't meet other criteria the Silver Lake deal does. The debate is do we see a big corporate such as Silver Lake being a good thing over Kiwi mum and dad investors. So, the question now is Silver Lake going to be a rugby saviour or not? What sort of hands do we want to feed when it comes to our national sport? So in the poem the old lady is anti dodgy corporates and the one that her son has gone to work for. The son sees his job as financial opportunity not to be missed..

This is a poem about an old lady telling her son that money doesn’t always make you happy written from both view points her and her sons. The son has taken a job with big dollars working for a corporation that has no ethics. Its not a true story its just made up due to it been a wet cold day here.
Old Lady Cries.
The old lady cries.
You want to give your family dollar numbers.
The corporates use empty words.
A numb me can’t completely avoid her words.
For a dollar reward.
I will join the material hoard.
Salute the chairman of the board.
Chasing bigger numbers.
Counting dollars in my sleep.
Chasing those extra noughts.
Filling my thoughts,
What once was ten now has to be a million.
I live in a new world.
I am just one of many.
Looking for a pretty penny.
One of many money worriers.
No longer a warrior.
She think’s I’m easily deceived.
Cutting of my knights armour.
Throwing away my sword.
For a good dollar reward.
Old lady cries.
You thrown away your sword.
No longer prepared.
To cut through empty promises.
This is the right time for you to be a doubting Thomas.
Their full of shallow promises.
Their not your saviour.
Their money wont do you no favours.
Why does the old lady see things different to me.
The corporate Kings.
Always will do their thing.
Succeed with their invading sting.
The corporate Kings.
Say all sorts of false things.
I will take their dollar and buy all sorts of material things.
Old lady cries.
They will throw you away.
Little thanks once they have made their hay.
You say you got to survive.
Keep my family alive.
Your love of material possession will lead you to depression.
Man made created things are a temporary fling.
Don’t worry old lady.
I’m thrown away my sword for a dollar reward.
I’m thrown away my sword for a dollar reward.

It was an honour to be able to use Philll''s fine guitar instrumental and wonderful music talent in a video. I tried to make it with the help of our neighbourhood Tui who Maree and I have named Papa Whisky after Phill.in a way that hopefully appeals to adults and kids.

Re: papa whiskey Tui (5 replies, posted in Recording)
I love the way Phill used his excellent music skills to compose and perform this piece of music Papa Whisky Tui. Those who know the NATO alphabet will see the PW connection here. I hope this video with a Tui that hangs around my neighbourhood playing a roll in it does Phill’s tune justice. Many books say that Tui's are usually solitary. It’s place in the forest is among the treetops where the flowers and fruit are borne.
Tui they fly at great speeds. Even though several Tui may feed in the same tree they have clearly defined territories. Outside of the breeding season they become partially nomadic and travel to towns and rural gardens and forest patches in search of good sources of nectar and fruit. Some birds regularly occupy each year summer breeding and winter feeding territories that can be 20 plus kilometers apart.
Although the Tui primary food source is nectar, they will hawk large insects. Tui will jump around and beat bushes to disturb stick insects and cicadas. This bird, is called by many names other than Tui or Koko, was of great importance to Maori and there are many stories about this relationship in the literature. Apart from potted Tui being a favourite food, they were very often kept in cages and trained to speak and even welcome people to a marae. ( Marae is a courtyard of a Maori meeting house, a place used as a social or ceremonial forum.) Many of these birds were famous and even fought over.
The ornithologist Olive commented on the Tui pugnacity and courage and wondered if perhaps this character has been the cause of their being attacked and sometimes killed by companies of blackbirds and starlings. However, the Tui has also been known to kill the birds it pursues

I was going to add another line in there about music live performance confidence for some people but thought it might drag the poem out too long. Also it didn't really fit I had this in mind.
Inside my rib cage.
My hearts doing a mad drum solo.
Pounding away loud.
Pounding away at a thousand miles an hour.

Chatting with a street busker I came up with this poem as a result of our conversation. It is not just about talking to him but me picking out bits of what we talked about and the universal emotions that come from being a muso.
Music Virus
He said to me he has the music virus.
There no such virus said I.
My eyes starting rolling looking at this guy.
He said that isn’t true.
I said tell me your point of view.
Did you catch it from a hen.
What are the symptoms my friend.
Are you going around the bend.
Is it something you can mend.
It started with a guitar.
He said left one morning on my bed.
From my dear mama.
I loved that guitar.
Now I’m a mix of confidence and self doubt.
One minute bullet proof and full of self belief.
Next second I’m filled with trembling insecurity.
An awful feeling like my music has no teeth.
I can't get any help.
I can't get any relief.
I'm just a busker on the street.
My life's like a record stuck on repeat.

Re: People Power (14 replies, posted in Poems)
Cheers Beamer and Mojo
I don’t think it's for me to give opinion on the American political situation as I know people on here living in your country have strong divisions. What I will say is that a politician’s rise and fall are always based on the way the people perceive and trust them. Now that word TRUST and politician don’t always go together. Behind political leader’s rhetoric is a marketing machine designed to feed negative thoughts on whoever the opposition is, some information true, some exaggerations and also drawing conclusions that are sometimes hype and have no substance. The Nazis claimed that the social and economic problems that Germany experienced in the 1920s and early 1930s were due in part to the weakening of the population created by an unfair burden of supporting disabled people. Nazi propaganda in the form of posters, news-reels and cinema films portrayed disabled people as "useless eaters" and people who had "lives unworthy of living". The propaganda stressed the high cost of supporting disabled people, and suggested that there was something unhealthy or even unnatural about society paying for this. Today even though there isn’t that argument going on over disabled people, politicians and their advocacy machine do push other ideas that put one part of the population against the other. At the moment you might say no party would advocate that we get rid of disabled people in the free world because of the cost. If we look at big chunks of the world if your not well or healthy you have very little hope. When Covid struck look at all the misinformation that people were fed as it became a big political division in countries about how to deal with it. Fortunately for us here in NZ the two main parties didn’t play politics with it. What I am saying is your political leaders Republican or Democrat have a big propaganda spin machine behind them which gives people a hard decision to make either way.

You hit the nail on head there Phill. Another disturbing trend around the world is the suppression of opposition voices by making them illegal by all those bad regimes out there. The underhanded laying of false charges against opposition people that are fabricated by those dodgy run countries internal governments corrupt security forces. Putin is a good example of suppressing opposition voices he is like many other corrupt leaders who are on this planet.

Re: People Power (14 replies, posted in Poems)
Cheers , Jim, Phill, Brian, thank you your input it is much appreciated. In these privileged times for many of us, there are people out there who forget they don’t have to risk their life or martyr themselves for some of the freedoms that many people in the free world today take for granted. The derogation of voting rights is widespread in many countries in the world. In my opinion people who live in countries where they can vote should vote purely on the basis that the world is full of countries where they don’t even get a chance to have some say in what’s going on. Also we should do it out of respect for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice with their life so that we can have this choice to vote. It is not only a human right but something that many humans don’t get the opportunity to do on this planet. I admire anyone who is prepared to stand even if their politics is not mine providing their not maniacs who want to be dictators, or people who don’t want free and fair elections set at appropriate intervals of time. One thing that has been lost in recent times is peaceful demonstrations with people holding placards about whatever their gripe is. There are now in many counties people who instead of demonstrating are rioting damaging fellow citizens property using it as a front too steal and loot, that also is a breakdown of democracy. I think people should use their voice even if I don’t agree with them but it should always be peaceful. I understand why people get sick of politics it is because the major parties around the world are using marketing and spin and with that somehow good and true debate gets lost. Bureaucrats and politicians do get out of step with what is going on right outside their front doors. One thing I have noticed in my extensive travels around the free world is the common thing of government run inefficient institutions, civil services and city councils that don’t meet the needs of the people in other words the business side or suppliers of political run services in all countries. I don’t blame all the civil servants its just that their systems and hierarchy agendas clash with those at the coal face trying to do a good job. I can tell you having been in countries that are not part of the free world their bureaucracy is far worse. Here endeth my rant.

Topic: People Power (14 replies, posted in Poems)
I wrote this after getting an ear bashing from a person on why they have never voted in a political election. After that they went on about how much they hate our present Government and the local council before telling me about the good politicians in history who they never voted for. Interestingly when I made the comment no political party or politician is perfect my ear basher took that point as a good reason not to vote at all. Feeling a bit frustrated after this discussion I recorded these words below down.
People Power
When I look at the planet.
There is more of us than them.
The people that cause the mayhem.
I’m not in that place where a dictator holds the ace.
Every now and then I get a chance to choose a King or Queen.
A leader on our scene.
In many places that is just a distant dream.
That man from Liverpool.
Did he sing about a fool.
A Fool On The Hill.
Or was it Power To The People.
Once there was the age of Aquarius.
Now its the age of trying it on.
Maybe I should sing a different song.
Join a mindless throng.
Maybe my vote was wrong.
At least I went along.
Just because I gave them my vote.
Doesn’t mean I live In a mindless space.
A space surrounded by a moat.
Or people on a slippery slope.
I wont march to the beat of their drum.
Or will I sing their every note.
I gave them my vote.
I have never been that good at placing bets at the tote.
I played my cards with no ace up my sleeve.
I just did what I believed.
Isn’t it true at times we all get deceived.
I get sick of people who say they don’t vote because its a waste of time.
They then complain and say its their fault not mine.
They drink their wine and join the decline.
Call everyone else a swine while not giving it some of their time.
Just because people want to see me.
Based on some stereotype.
Doesn’t give me sleepless nights.
I wake up in the morning.
Sometimes to a different light.
Knowing I am only human and I don’t always get it right.
.
