Ranger 1964,
Paw has hit it on the head, I just got back from a music store and played a Gibson, Breedlove & Taylor. The Gibson & Taylor were both great sounding guitars. Both actions played well and If I had the cash I would have walked away with the Gibson. With that said as Southpaw said play them all and what feels and sounds good to you is what matters. I have always said that a million dollar guitar won't make you sound like a million if you can't play it.
Good luck,

Just ordered my Michael Kelly Patriot Decree today (black vapor model). Their new this year and the winter NAMM show is going on in Anaheim Cal right now so I have to wait a week. I wanted a LP style guitar without the LP price ($399.44 american). Michael Kelly is a real quality line of guitars. I am going to change out the MK PAF's for either a set of Rockfield SWC's or a set of Rio Grande BBQ buckers. Then I use the MK PAF's in my current SG project. You really have to go to the Michael Kelly website and check out their stuff and play one if you have a chance. I was buying a Patriot Custom, then I saw the Patriot Premium, loved the quilted maple top but they quoted me the wrong price and would not honor it. If I bought the Premium I was going to change out the EMG Zakk Wylde pickup set anyway so I bought the Patriot Decree. Now Bootlegger is a happy man.

I would like to get a personal review of this amp because my boss said that he would give me his vintage one that he hasn't used in like 15 years. It has been sitting in storage and he offered it. I accepted not really knowing what this amp is really about...
Thanks in advance,
Dm
Take it dude!even offer to pay him for it. Fender bassman amps are great tube amps. I have a Deville because I can't swing a Bassman. If you don't take it P.M. me and let me know what he wants for it.

P.S. I still owe you praise songs with chords, have not fogotten.

I bought the Crossroads Chicago Guitar Festival (2007) a month ago and it was well worth the $23.00 spent. Some highlights for me was Sonny Landreth, Steve Winnwood (he can play guitar) Jeff Becks bass player She's cute and she can really play bass, John Mayer smoked and a few others. Go out and spend the cash you won't be sorry.
I also bought a Dean Vendeta to take off the neck for my sg project(paid 80.00 dollars) and put a Samick neck on it (bought it at a guitar show for $20.00) It smokes now it's my practice guitar.

I don't think that a similar topic exists. Since I have plenty of time, I am surfing a lot on the internet
Now and then, I find guitars, really good looking and not so cheap brands.
I discovered a few minutes ago some brands
- MICHAEL KELLY: Never heard of it, and reasonable prices: $469.99 for a Michael Kelly Patriot Black Electric Guitar. Also producing acoustic guitars.
- MATON GUITARS: an Australian brand, also never heard about this branded, discovered while reading an article about Tommy Emmanuel, a superb finger picking performer, seen on youtube. You can check it = great sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phil,
I have been planting seed on the Michael Kelly's ever since my friend got sponsered by them and I heard the Ademption sound byte on there website. I am finally buying one this week can't make up my mind on the Patriot Custom or Valor X. Played the Patriot Q, Vintage & Limited have not Played the Valor yet. Leaning towards a walnut stained flame top maple Patriot Custom.
Will decide & order this week.

Still have my first 1964 Fender Mustang bought it used (10 years old already). I bought it because I wanted to learn how to play guitar.

I don't like it Phil too much noise every want to be guitar god playing scales and nothing else, no feeling or emotion. I try to stay out of music stores because of that or find a mom & pop shop with road scarred sales persons.

1) Who is considered as the most important BLUES musician, with a major influence on a lot of artists.
Did it start with Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters....
2) WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN:
- Chicago Blues
- St Louis blues
- Memphis
- New Orleans
What can be considered as MISSISIPI delta blues, in fact WHAT IS THIS KIND OF BLUES.SO = EVOLUTION OF BLUES, WHERE DID IT START, WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT STYLES.
WHO WAS OR WERE THE MOST INFLUENCED EXAMPLE FOR TODAY'S BLUES
Phil,
The majority of persons will say that Robert Johnson started the new blues sound, then Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Hubert Sumlin, B.B. Albert & Freddy King, Buddy Guy and Jimmy Reed. It was Stevie Ray Vaughn that brought the blues to the mainstream audience. Really cannot define the different styles blues that you mentioned above with exception of the Delta Blues slow 4/4 with slide. Todays blues slingers would be Jimmy Vaughan, Robert Cray, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Johnny Lang, Tommy Castro and of course Eric Clapton.

Right now the Black Korina flame top strat with humbuckers & the sg that I am currently building and the MK Patriot I'm buying this week.
Bootlegger.
Some are built for comfort some are built for speed. When you young your hard and fast (playing) as you get older you ger low & slow and become a finess player. You only play hard & fast when you have to and slow to make it last.

Russell, 4 against 1. But if you play electric and very loud, some extra effects, you won't hear the difference. I saw 2-3 timers a guy playing on a Squier, followed by a Mexican strat, and a US Strat
It was not easy to hear a difference.
For acoustic guitars, it is very important, but more wood = more $$, and going for real good wood = $$$$$$.
Phil,
As mentioned by Tenn.Strat the major tonal structuring will come from you wood choices and will factor on the sound shaping of your guitar. Also mentioned is the quality of the craftmanship of the guitar maker. Of course your electronics will contribute largely as will the quality of the electronics you purchase. With that said play each of the Fenders, squire,MIM & MIA strats unplugged and thats where you'll hear the tonal difference and sustain.

Also most music stores sell pickup covers...everything from pink to flat black...I wouldn't use it without...
As jaygordon75 said just buy a set of pick up covers they will cost you about $10.00 american. (you don't need one but your guitar will look better with a set of matching pickup covers).
Bootlegger
I agree with Tennessee and Cytania... A good set up can cure a lot of problems with a cheaper guitar and if you are looking for a heavy sound then something with humbucker pickers might work better. Although a Strat can really chunk up heavy with the right amp and stuff...Hendrix, Trower, etc.. I like the Fender Strats and Tellys but a lower cost guitar that might work for you could be an Epiphone Les Paul...I have an Epi LP Specially that sounds pretty good for heavy stuff. Also one of the best buys on Ebay I think is the Peavey Wolfgangs...for five or six hundred dollars you can get an awesome guitar that will go from clean to dirty and sound great! Fixing up your Squire might cost too much and still not get the sound that you are looking for...a Mexican Strat has all sort of potential but they have quality wood and pretty decent tuners and such.
Michael Kelly Guitars, Will order mine this weekend (after the California guitar show) (went to buy one last week but did not have the color I wanted). Check out the website www.michaelkellyguitars.com and read the guitar player magazine review on them. I am picking up a patriot $499.00 list (american) very well made good craftmanship. I played a Patriot limited 2 weeks ago, Before I order I am going to play a Epi LP standard, Gibson LP classic & standard and a Patriot to compare all three will Review when I'm done. The patriot limited I played was a good guitar and is a good guitar to hot rod with up grades or play as is. Will let you know after I pull the trigger.

In fact, this is a logical sequel, since I was discussing about expensive guitars.
The best way to compare this is with a "jewellery's store." A very close friend of me, designed, imported diamond rings, watches (Cartier, Patek Philippe, Rolex), and a ring with diamond with a price tag around 5000$, he told me that the store takes a 100% benefit. They don't sell every day jewels like this. If I showed him a picture, he was able to make an EXACT replica, without going from the manufacturer to the distributor and finally to the store, resulting in the same ring for a price between 1500-2000$. This looks unbelievable, but true.
So what if you open (having enough money) with very expensive guitars.
Of course it is almost impossible to sell and have 5 Martins D-45V in your store.
But you specialise, a more narrow choice, in acoustics able to offer your customers, (unfortunately, people having the big money) a choice between let's say 20 Martins, Gibsons, Taylor's, and some other brands. If you sell a Gibson SJ-200, you order another. My question was
- are there shops, selling exclusive guitars.
- you are a skilled salesman, and a pretty good guitar player with a great knowledge, will such a store succeed. Of course, these things depend on a lot of conditions, where, decoration, approach, I have 1 town in mind, where this store could "fit": CARMEL, at the West Coast.
THIS IS JUST AN HYPOTHETIC, FICTIVE SITUATION and PROBABLY EXCLUSIVE.
I just liked to know if a store like this can be realised.
Phil,
In theory and comparisance to a high end jewlery store and if you had a base of wealthy guitar players with expendible income a high end guitar store would work. But as you read the postings on this site practicality wins out. Most of the persons looking and or playing guitar in on this site would have a budget of a average of $400.00 (usa) to spend on a guitar. With that said this would work if you had a collector's clientel who would indeed have the expendible income. My thought would be a web based business because you would reach more person in a world wide market. You would not have a walk in customer base but you could still have a showroom by appointment. This would keep joe rock star from coming in and trying to shred on that $70.000 PRS dragon.
Let me know when your up & running I do your set ups for you.

MAINTENANCE YOUR GUITAR
- Acoustic
- ElectricWhen you enter a guitar store, you will find in a corner a stash of plastic bottles, and cleaning towels. I bought one, just before I needed to go to my luthier, who told me that this is lost money.
I don't remember the product.
I am also quit lazy to do this and living alone, I become more dependant, also I can't do it to avoid pain. You can call it ridiculous but my constant pain gets worse, just because of the position. Sitting walking even laying down.
What is the best way for guitar maintenance?
To remove
- DUST
- GREASE
- Stains
- HEADSTOCK, to this correct, you almost have to change your strings.
Phil,
GHS guitar gloss non petroleum based polish does not fog or leave a film and lizzard spit a citrus oil based liquid for oiling your fret board.

Here's a quick fix, don't play heavy metal around mice. Music is not going to effect a persons mood to commit acts of violence. I own too many fire arms yet I do not feel an urge to go out and commit acts of murder or mayhem. It is the individual and a lack of grounding that is the problem. As mentioned before in a previous reply to this post spend the money on something else.
Bootlegger.
Cytania,
To reply to the title "why it's so hard to pick a guitar" it is because most of the time we don't know what we want in a guitar we just want a new guitar. Experience as you are finding out refines you and you become more aware of what a can be done with a guitar and what you want in a guitar. By the way good choice on the Fender Bassman money well spent.
Bootlegger.
Nela,
Most of the members on this site know more about guitars than the sales persons at music stores. Look for the seasoned guy (older) who shows signs of roadware. Chances are he is still giging and has been around guitars for a long time.

Tibernius wrote:Since this is still about guitar-making, how much does it cost to make a guitar? I know that's a "how long is a piece of string" question, but can someone give me a rough estimate?
I'm seeing solid-body kits from (I think) a couple of different makers that are in the $220-$280 range, depending on what wood is used for the body and fretboard. That's with frets pre-set, and all the electronics included.
Me, I think I'd want just the wood, and add my own choices for hardware and tuners. In that case the price would go up, probably pretty substantially.
Even if I decide to just do this sort of thing as a hobby, I need to get set up with a tax ID number just so I can get the goodies wholesale...
Dguyton,
Buy the kit and trash or donate the electronics & tuners to someone or use as spares or replacments on a repair. Overall the kit will be more cost effective versus buying just the body & neck. If the guitar is for you you can buy the electronics & hardware of your choosing to make it your semi custom guitar.

John,
You mnentioned second hand guitars and limited knowledge, whats to stop you from taking a friend to help you check out some used guitars? You could stumble on to a jem.

OK, I'm new to this whole electric guitar thing--got one for Christmas...love it and all that stuff.
When I'm being nice to the strings, no problem. When I'm diggin in and smackin' them around, they seem to rattle off of the fretboard a bit--when the amp is up, no big deal, it drowns out the "noise", but if I have it at lower levels you can hear it.Is this normal, or does it sound like I need some set up work. I'm not getting any string buzz...but maybe it is the action. It has a floating bridge, so it looks like I can just turn the little wheels to affect the action...bad idea?
What do you think?
Southpaw41L is correct get you axe set up. They will chjeck the straightness of your neck and ajust it and also adjust your bridge saddles for intonation and lower your bridge if needed. Have them change your strings to your brand of preference and set it up for the gauge of your choice. Also have them oil the fret board if you have a rosewood or ebony fret board.

Thanks for the info, it helps..
wWlikerson is an aftermarket bridge for tele's not an improvement although they are made better, they also make aftermarket strat tremolos. (tele's rarely have trems) If you want a up grade www.callahan guitars their quite expensive.
