I don't know if this helps you, when I play blues, or at least try to play blues, I try playing own stuff.
Chords often used are starting with E (or E7) going to A (or E7), play this a few times, followed by B7, back to A and E, or just back to the E chord.
Do you have albums or CD's with blues songs? If so, the best way is trying to play along with the song.
A nice song is: "before you accuse me", performed by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Clapton..
Even more interesting is the fact that the song is not so difficult, and if you want: go to youtube, log in, search this title, and there it is, acoustic, electric, tutorial. I think TODAY, it is amazing what you can find AND learn there.
Hope this is helpful

Re: CHEAP AND DECENT AMPS (10 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
yep Detman, living alone is sometimes good, I've got too much girlfriends, most were models, but if you open the package, it really starts to stink.
I have a little Laney, bass amp, which I used a lot, but having those 3 amps (The Laney amp, I got for 10$, because they wanted to put that amp on the street, because every month, (since a few years it's finished) and there was a something special back then. It is UNBELIEVABLE what people throw away, a new TV, the old on the street, and it was every month the same, people driving with a van, street after street, and looking to the stuff people THROW away. Stuff, still working. I used that Laney amp a lot, on a day I needed the power cable which is identical as the cable you use to connect a PC screen. I didn't use that amp since 2 years. I just looked and it's a BC30. About amps, and effects: as told the greatest amp (subjective) is the Fender Cybertwin, it takes you probably a year to try out all possible combinations, and in fact a effect floorboard is useless here. I use 1 item: Korg Tone Works Pandora PX4D, giving me, besides all the effects in such a small device, the possibility to have a rhythm section. Since the day I started using it, convinced that my rhythm wasn't bad. BIG MISTAKE, now I can tell that my rhythm is pretty good. I don't know at all how many chordians play alone versus a band. Playing now, after exercising a lot with my pandora, is a real pleasure.

Re: MONEY DOES GROW ON TREES (5 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Thanks Zurf. I know and owe a lot about guitars.
And yet the always recurring question is the wood. About the food: didn't know that expression. Here is the same in Latin: DE GUSTIBUS ET COLORIBUS NON EST DISPUTANDUM.
About colour and taste, we don't dispute (We use this expression). Zurf do you have also the impression that there are too many different guitars, FOR SURE Fender.(This an electric, on the acoustic site. It was the first guitar popping up.
I wrote 3 topics:
- cheap and decent electric guitars
- cheap and decent acoustic guitars
- cheap and decent amps.
It is sometimes very difficult for me to talk about how many? what brand?, because I earned a lot of money, when I was practising as a Doc. . Reading a lot of topics, I know that I am blessed, being able to have 27 guitars, an investment and passion
I learned a lesson here of modesty, seeing so many people trying to buy a guitar, with a limited budget. If you want a guitar, you want it immediately (it happened to me too) and with the knowledge if you have patience, and are able to wait a couple of months, it allows you to buy a better guitar.
Sorry for all the facts I wrote here, I just want to give advise, having the whole day to search on the internet a lot of information. It takes sometimes 2-3 hours to find the best.

This is getting one of the most visited topics.
!!?!!
I woke up an hour ago and the first thing I do, is going to the "bathroom" like you aal do, and in that period (just before) I start my PC, and there I am, checking my mail (I Have more than 3000 mails, I collect them too.
Why: Most of you know my condition (if not ask) It happened already twice, that I had to use an old email (at least one, 14 months old) against an insurance, claiming something else, unfortunately I replied with that old email : problem solved).
When I see all the fantastic and (quit a few) very funny mails, my day starts wonderful. I don't denie to have posted some stupid mails, better USELESS mails.
I've got a couple of bad & sad days. TOO much thinking...
There were a few answers on this topic, I understood, but missing the point. My English, AND knowledge AND writing are improved since here on chordie at least 50%. I still have some problems, to put words on the right place, I am working on it.
I almost forgot: YOU ARE ALL THE NICEST PEOPLE I EVER MET.
IS THERE ANOTHER SITE, LIKE CHORDIE? You can notice who is online, I hope to find a way to reach the visitors. I am sure that this is one of the fastest growing sites 5(FIVE) years already.
- What's the difference between a fiddle and a violin ?
Who cares - neither one's a guitar.
- Did you hear about the guitarist who was in tune ?
Neither did I. I will and with a "respect"joke: How many guitar players does it take to cover a Stevie Ray Vaughn tune ? Evidently all of them.
That is one of my favourites, it is funny AND at the same time RESPECT for SRV.
I'll be back soon, on this "teasing" topic.

Sorry, I am in a weird mood today. I need fun. Always the lonesome doc, but at least here, I have company.
This something I wanted to know already months ago, and seeing you answer here it is:
- You mentioned Scottish English. Is there a difference between Scottish English and English English.
- Your, better, the Scottish dialect, is it close, or more or less close to the Irish Gaelic, or Welsh?
I used to have a fantastic book, about "origin and development of modern languages) It started all with "Indo German"About gaelic, it is also named celtic. I remember that long time ago, before Hastings, some locations where dominated by "picts" as far as I can remember you had first the Romans, followed somewhere in 400-500 AC by Anglo-Saxions, and isn't it so that people like vikings, lived there too. Is it possible to show me websites, because this is so interesting, like the difference between Scotland, Ireland, OLD (5th century) English AND THE INSTRUMENTS THEY USED

Those parkwood guitars look really nice. It is getting more and more difficult to choose.
I wrote it a dozen times: 25 years ago, you had in Electric: Gibson LP Standard, Custom, SG
Fender: Stratocaster and telecaster.
A wasn't really interested in acoustics, but I had a Yamaha FG300 (?)
NOW: almost impossible to find "your" guitar, unless you can play a month all moddels they have. Did you look on youtube or myspace, because you a lot of brands there with sound. It might be not the "real sound" but it gives you some inspiration and information.
I just looked at youtube, you will find a few videos concerning parkwood, just google youtube, and search for parkwood guitars.
hope this helps.

NOOOOOOOOOO, I am not telling that the other topic is better, I just wanted to tell that there are maybe more answers. I don't know a lot about Fender acoustics, but I do know that are 'maybe slowly' producing better acoustics, and as I wrote, it is still a mystery to me why they didn't jump on the train when they could. I am convinced that buying an acoustic (talking about the more expensive) it is possible that they will increase in value, if it is successful

Topic: ABOUT PINK FLOYD SONGS (1 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
Again Pink Floyd? YES, but totally different, no best songs, no best band, just their songs.
Probably there will be chordians who noticed the same.
I was listening to "another brick in the wall" ... teacher leave us kids alone, I played along with this song, without thinking, followed by "shine on your crazy diamond" when I realised that the chords they use were almost all basic chords. I tried a 3th song, "mother" playing and singing loud, I love that song so much, and I got a confirmation.
They use simple chords, like C, E, D , A, or some minor chords, like Am, Em, and that was all.
This brings me to the question: how is it possible, that using almost only basic chords, they became so huge and famous? Is it magic, chemistry? I go for the arrangements, and producer(s), they are considered as the best "psychedelic" group, end sixties, they also used strange sounds, listen to the song MONEY, or the helicopter sound on the WALL album.
I am trying to figure it out, but I don't find an answer.
So I do hope that there are people, giving their opinion, about the fact to create this great music, using the chords I mentioned.
If you listen to the Beatles, they have a lot of beautiful, melodic and catchy tunes, but if you try to play their songs, they use a lot more complicated chords.

Topic: MONEY DOES GROW ON TREES (5 replies, posted in Acoustic)
People use to say that money is not growing on trees.
But finally I have an answer: it does grow on trees.
WHY? they use wood to make guitars, good guitars are expensive, a lot of $$$, and that's a reason. I know it sounds stupid, my point was asking a few things about "that wood".
- Who knows what wood is best, to make an acoustic guitar. Mahogany, Spruce and what is the difference between Brazilian Rosewood versus Indian Rosewood. You can see often, surfing on sites, like MARTIN, how important Brazilian Rosewood is. I know that the import is very low these days, so it is a lot easier to import and use Indian Rosewood. DOES THE HUMAN EAR HEAR A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THOSE TWO?
Also cheaper models use a “laminate†top = multiple layers of wood that are glued together.
More expensive guitars, use solid wood, often spruce.
It is maybe impossible to answer the question: what kind of wood, used to build a guitar body, gives the best results? I have looked on many sites, but never found a decent answer.
Thanks
I would really appreciate, not only for me, but for others too, to have an answer.

Re: fender acoustic guitar (7 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Jaminfesteddonkey, there is a whole topic about Fender Acoustics, with about 22 replies. Take a look there and see if your question is answered. I wrote this topic, because I was surprised to notice that where Fender makes great (and expensive electric guitars, still in a kind of struggle: who has the best guitar: Fender or Gibson!!??)
Compared to Gibson, producing great and expensive acoustic guitars, they didn't focus on acoustic guitars. I have the impression that they start making much better guitars, and because of Gibson, having great acoustics, but not cheap at all, the prices will be lower, even their best acoustics, because if they don't it will be a lot more difficult to have a piece of the pie.

Re: installing a pickup into an acoustic (7 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
There are different opinions about pick-up installation. I have a few very quit expensive guitars, like a Gibson Montana Gold SJ-200, custom shop, also a Martin HD-28 (probably the best I have, always in tune, a very loud sound and solid. I also have a Martin D-45V. I went to the guitar store, asking the same question. They told me that in most acoustic guitars, they have to drill a little hole. But remembering the sixties, in particular seeing people like Bob Dylan, Donovan, who played at that time using 2 microphones, one placed near the third fret, you were able to hear a great sound too. You just need to place the mics in such a way, that you avoid the biggest problem, a horrible feedback sound. I must say, it works, and I own 1 Martin D-1, electro acoustic, giving me a great sound. I don't use a lot my acoustics to play electro-acoustic, I am not a performer, I am glad to play pretty good and "not performing", I play my acoustic guitars as they are. If I want to play electric, I take one of my electric guitars
and plug & play ( I collected guitars, not longer these days).
But I am convinced that there is a system, you can put in or on your acoustic guitar, without holes, it is not that cheap. There are a lot of decent electro-acoustic guitars, like Takamine, used by more and more guitar players (the prices are getting higher, I think that, once the manufacturer realise that their brand is starting to be popular, the prices are going up too. They also start to use better wood.
I hope I could help, but it's up to you of course to decide.

Re: BUILDING YOUR OWN "ELECTRIC" GUITAR (13 replies, posted in Electric)
Boot, I am always amazed about your knowledge, skill and love for music (I had a few bad days earlier this week). But building guitars, is that your hobby, passion, or job.
About a 12-string guitar, sounds beautiful, but the fingertips 15 minutes later??!!!
About the PRS EG model, I think I told you that I have the 3 different kinds.
S-S-S (Lindy Fralin domino pick-ups) a S-S-H, and a H-S-H. I don't find them again on eBay.
You gave me/us, very interesting sites.
But if I should ask you to build a guitar, having enough money, what should you propose, knowing that I adore PRS, I mean
- wood used for the body (talking about great wood, because there are s many different woods)
WHAT is your preferred wood? giving the best sound.
- wood used for the neck (I have small hands, and a telecaster neck is not my thing, even having a 1952 reissue, and adoring the sound). Is the wood used for the neck (a lot of rosewood is used) important for the sound, or adding something extra talking of sound.
- Electronics: what are your top humbuckers, or coils you use.
An easy answer can be to pick the wood, neck and electronics myself, and it is a question, giving you the opportunity to use the best (example: price range between 2000 --> 5000$) material, and the information that I love PRS, having an easy to play neck.
I am really very interested, what you would "create" knowing this information, and telling that you are 100% free to construct one.
Thanks a lot Boot.

But please don't go to take me upstairs for a ride.
Even more: before you accuse me take a look at yourselves, you will see your faces and notice that there is somethin' on your mind. Go on, hideaway.
Let's make a deal: WHO HAS THE GUTS TO TRANSLATE a phrase written in Dutch, and using every possible translation site.
I woukd love to see the results, so please translate this:
NA EEN LANGE DAG VAN VALLEN EN OPSTAAN, BEGON HIJ WEER ZIJN VROUW TE MISHANDELEN, NA EERST DE KINDEREN MISBRUIKT TE HEBBEN.
Who takes the challenge, because it can be
- correct
- funny, and for me and for you
Have a beautiful day.

Re: Developing good calluses (9 replies, posted in Acoustic)
A very good training for the fingertips is playing on a 12-string guitar, that is one of the most painful instruments.
Even a 6-string making your fingertips "stronger", if you stop playing a few weeks, it starts again.
This brings me to an idea or question: is there a kind of material, compared to a glove (not a good one but..) to put on your fingers, you use on the strings and protecting them?

Tibernius, I am surprised that you never heard about this song. I agree, it is located in the late sixties: HONKY TONK WOMAN" by THE ROLLING STONES.
I made a HUGE mistake, I wrote the chords you can use, G, C and D, and play it acoustic.
The mistake is: it is not HONKY TONK BLUES BUT, "COUNTRY HONK" and the chords and melody are the same, except that Country Honk is acoustic and slower.
I will correct this immediately.
I am 100% sure that you know this song, maybe you can find it on myspace or youtube.
I wrote the correct song title

Re: power chords- help!! (12 replies, posted in Electric)
Dear Tibernius and Cytania.
I love power chords, even on an acoustic guitar.
I want to tell you, that even loving a power chord, I use MORE THE USUAL chords, pulling/picking the strings resulting in a similar power chord.
Probably the risk to "destroy a string" is present, a lot more than using a power chord.
Example:
- Honky tonk woman (Rolling Stones), if you play this song acoustic and slower, you have the song
COUNTRY HONK
This song starts in G, followed by C and D. I played that song with power chords, and also with the classic G, C and D, strumming down, and back. When strumming back up, I pull on 2 or 3 strings, providing me a kind of power chord.
Do you remember Frijid Pink's interpretation of the HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN? They used power chords, distortion included.
Tibernius, do you consider that interpretation of that song as a power chord song?

Re: Playing by ear (14 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Jeff, you have a lot of information now and this makes me happy. It is difficult to add more comment. I learned a lot, trying to play along with songs, this helped me a lot.
Zurf, your answer is great. Reading it, I get scared. All those scales. I am not a guitar hero, but I play pretty good, until I read, see, and hear other people playing. In a way, I am lazy too, skipping a lot of very interesting tips, like blues scales. Tabs: same thing.
Even playing pretty good, I notice that 90% are playing better.
- Fingerpicking: I try, and I use it more and more ONLY a few seconds.
- What term is used when you try to play "fingerpicking style" using a pick?
- Am I lost, because I developed a particular style, like strumming, followed by blocking chords, or strumming starting with the big E string to the little E string? This strumming is going once or twice, down, and going back, I use often 2 or 3 strings, providing me a similar sound as a power chord.

This is nice to read, we are going back in time.
I also have good memories seeing Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, and so many more.
But I will never forget Barcelona, it was so impressive, so amazing, standing in front, people getting almost hysterical, when they started to jam. People were already leaving, but came back, I saw people pushing, almost walking over the heads of others.
