Hey SouthPaw,

I've recently started to listen to Elbow as well. A friend recommended them as well as Fleet Foxes which is another great band with a unique sound. I particularly like the song "Bones of you" which has a great video:

Hey z,

Maybe this site will help you to figure out how to develop rhythm patterns while playing. I've used it in the past and it's very helpful:

Posting again because i remembered another phrase:

I agree with Roger's definition. Simple and to the point. The thought of it being a universal language holds very true for me after having experienced playing with people in different countries and backgrounds. You somehow always have an idea of what someone expresses through their instruments even without understanding the words.

Here's one phrase that I always liked :  "Music is food for the Soul". My music teacher from high school used to say that to us at the beginning of every lesson.

Hey Tony,

A good way to find other musicians is through your local Craigslist. Try going to www.craigslist.com and looking in the "musicians" section for your city.

Good luck.

bensonp,

If you can, try out the Martin d-15. It's a solid mahogany guitar and plays beautifully. It's definitely my next purchase. Excellent balance in sound (highs and lows) and has a warm tone with a solid punch when you need it. At most stores, it's a little over 1000$.

Good luck with your search.

Oh yea... I was talking about the video on the same page. Saw MGMT mentioned and got sidetracked... my bad. The original is nice too by the way.

Props man! I really enjoyed that cover. I saw MGMT this past summer at an open air festival called Osheaga that's held in Montreal, Canada. This song brings back good memories. Thanks for sharing smile

Wicked Song! I'd love to hear a recording.

Hey Chordians,

For those of you that appreciate some good acoustic guitar music, I highly recommend checking out Rodrigo y Gabriela. Simply great rhythms and melodies from this duo. Their style is kind of a hybrid version of Latin & Jazz music with a Metal influence.

What really got to me is Gabriela's rhythmic guitar skills. Her precision and speed are really something. It's inspired me to start learning some spanish guitar techniques. Right now, I'm learning how to do triplets, so if anyone has some advice for those, it would be greatly appreciated smile.

Here are some samples:

So far, I've never been dissapointed with Tanglewood. Last winter, I picked up a TW-55 model and found it to be an amazing guitar. Great sound, feel and not expensive considering other guitars I've compared it to. I've also tried a bunch of their acoustics, and it seems even their bottom line models (Indiana) still give an excellent value for the cash that you would spend.
I've actually been wanting to give the model mentioned above a shot. I've been looking for a good semi-electric for a while without wanting to spend too much. Unfortunately, I haven't found one to try out yet. Please give me your impressions if you decide to get it.

Hey Russell,

I've been trying out Chrome for a couple of days now. So far, what I can say is that it's a very lightweight browser and web pages seem to load up quite fast compared to others (IE, Firefox).

The best feature is probably the address bar which also doubles as a search tool (using Google). It makes surfing the web more efficient because you don't have to go back to a search engine every time you want to go somewhere new. You'll notice the lack of a menu bar and that the available features aren't very extensive. So, if you're more into nice plugins and add-ons I would recommend Firefox 3 instead. But if you want a simple browser that works fast and effectively, it could be a good choice.

That said, they still have a long way to go to make it really appealing. First of all, they should really integrate all the other Google tools (Google desktop, Google Maps, etc...) into the browser and give more personalisation options (at least for the look of the browser). I also noticed a few bugs, mainly related to AJAX enabled sites, but nothing too drastic. There are also a few developer tools for programmers (such as myself) but nothing close to what you can find for Mozilla-based browsers like Firefox. Hopefully, they'll improve Chrome a lot in the next few versions after they've let users fool around with it a bit and have given feedback.

Anyway, bottom line is Mozilla Firefox is still the best (especially 3.0), Chrome isn't bad at all (for a first version anyway), and IE is still terrible =/.

You should give it a whirl. It's a small download and worth a shot.

I came across this Bob Dylan site which has alot of tabs and lead sheets. Thought some Dylan fans could find it useful:

This kid is definitely amazing. He plays all sorts of stuff including Andy Mckee, Thomas Leeb, and Tommy Emmanuel. He's actually performed with Tommy Emmanuel (check his youtube profile for Blue Moon) and apparently has close connections to Thomas Leeb (the inscription on his guitar is by Thomas Leeb).

Check out his profile on YT, quite interesting... especially for a 12 yr old...

Hey Corleone,

I purchased my first Tanglewood about 3 weeks ago: A TW55-DLX electro-acoustic. So far, I've been very pleased. Had a set-up done from my local guitar shop, and it plays beautifully. No problems with barre chords or any other techniques. I often play acoustic fingerstyle so I'm pretty picky when it comes to the action of my guitars. It has a great tone as well, pretty different from its competition when I was choosing which guitar to buy (Taylor 110ce/210ce, Takamine EG series). Plus the entire guitar is solid wood (Sitka Spruce & Mahogany Sides and Back), no laminate material.

My other acoustic is a Guild, so it took a bit of time for me to get used to the way the Tanglewood played. A few days of practice made it very comfortable.

So, to respond, I'd first say it's hard to say without knowing the model. However, even less expensive guitars can play & sound very nicely, so I wouldn't always stick to that logic. What I DO recommend, is to see what you can do about setting up the guitar's action correctly. If you're having difficulty to play chords and such, bring it to your shop, and see if they can adjust the neck/bridge to make the strings closer to the fretboard, so that's it's easier to do your formations. Another option could be to switch to lighter gauge strings.

In any case, best of luck. Tanglewoods, in my experience, are great guitars for the price.

Hey Tim,

I noticed that you asked "why" and "how" harmonics are used. Here is an example of what harmonics can add to a musical piece. Great texture in the music:

That sounds like "My Way" by Frankie "Blue-eyes"?

One of my all-time favs :

" Take me disappearing thru the smokerings of my mind, Down the foggy ruins of time, Far past the frozen leaves, The haunted frightened trees, Out to the windy beach, Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow"

Who wants to guess where this is from?

Has anyone heard of Nick Drake? Incredible songwriter who experimented with all types of messed up tunings. Don't even know how his guitar takes it... Tried to play Pink Moon and my high e string snapped twice sad.

My first goal song when I started playing was The Wind by Cat Stevens.

Right now, my goal song is Ebon Coast by Andy Mckee : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSnWhsmlGec

I think Goal songs are a great way to measure progress and learn patience.

I use a Guild GAD series and I find the neck rather wide & comfortable.

Check out the GAD-50. Great guitar, wouldn't trade it for anything:

There are other more affordable Guild models as well. Try one at your guitar store next time you're there.
