Hi krishanu, I gave Nothing Else Matters a listen and was pleasantly surprised.

I am always open to any suggestions for new stuff to listen to, thanks for the idea.

If you like rap, what do think of Jay-Z ? , I think 99 problems is an awesome track. (Be warned of the language, 18 certificate)

cheers

David

I'd pretty much agree with you on this one. I guess the simple answer is that any genre is good, it's the quality of the musicianship and the songwriting that matters.

I did see Metallica playing at the recent Live Earth gig and I thought, my god what an unholy racket! So I suppose that metal isn't my thing either.

But how would you categorize Led Zeppelin, because I love that band?

By the way, I thought I hated all rap music as well until my eighteen year old daughter started playing me some of the good stuff.

What type of bridge does the guitar have?

I think the guitarist in question is using compression and a little bit of chorus.

I get a similar sound using that combination using my Telecaster through a Vox Valvetronix modelling amp.

(Oh and you're right he/she has got reverb on there as well)

Sell your house (or your soul to the devil), You know you have to have that guitar!

I'm glad you liked it, I wouldn't be without mine, pity I had to send my son down a coal mine to get it.

cheers

I have an Epiphone Viola bass.

It sounds great for re-creating the sixties sound, and because it's hollow bodied you can practice without plugging in.

My son also likes the sound of it, and he's a Guns 'n' Roses fan !

I've just been over to the Gibson site to take a look at the Lucille.

It looks really nice.

I've never played a Gibson, but if BB King's sound is anything to go by, it must sound brilliant. Mick Jones from the Clash loved BB King and only ever played Gibsons owing to his influence. The Clash have always been one of my favorite bands so I think I'd appreciate your guitar.

What is that strange looking knob/dial above the volume controls?

By the way, I had to wait until I was 48 years old to get that Gretsch, My friend at university back in the 80's had a fiftes Gretsch that he picked up in a junk shop in the UK for £20!  Since then, I always wanted one. Suffice to say, I had to pay a whole lot more for mine.

all the best

David

I have never heard this before.

As you may have noticed, I have a Gretsch 6120 Nashville (Brian Setzer Signiture Model).

I bought this guitar because Gretsch designed and built this model to Brian Setzer's specifications, they modelled the internal strutting on guitars from the fifties that Brian particularlly liked. The guitar's sustain is increased because of this design.

I would imagine that if someone just had their name or signiture painted on an instrument that it wouldn't add value, but on the other hand how could the value be decreased?

Gretsch have produced Chet Atkins guitars for years and some of these are now worth big bucks.

I really would like to see an explanation of this viewpoint that made any sense.

What about the bagpipes - inconsiderate of other peoples's feelings?

Thanks

Is the guitar very popular in India?

I ask because I've always assumed that Indian music uses different scales and intervals that are not obtainable from a guitar.
Or is the Western twelve tone system used in your country these days?

cheers

David

Gretsch 6120 Nashville (Brian Setzer Signiture Model) This is my favorite, sounds brilliant plugged in or not.
Fender Telecaster (made in the good old USA), I keep this one in open G tuning for that Keith Richards Sound.
Epiphone Viola bass, re-create the sound of the sixties.
Jasmine Electro-Acoustic (very loud when plugged in)

acmecorp

Well, do you remember the Roadrunner cartoons where the coyote always bought explosive devices and other lethal products from the Acme Company?

Since I was a kid I always wanted to work for Acme, so now I do, I am a web designer and programmer with my own company called Acme Software.

So, acmecorp is short for the Acme Corporation.

Pretty dull I suppose.

cheers

I recently bought an electric guitar for my son (aged 11).

I had originally insisted that he learnt on an acoustic guitar, but he rightly pointed out that an electric is easier to play for those with tender fingers because the action on an electric is usually lower and the neck is usually more narrow.

In the U.K. most music shops will do a package (guitar, amp, strap, lead) for under £200, but you must go and try the instrument to see if it feels right in your hands.

I bought a Squier Stratocaster (Fenders low cost alternative to the real made in the USA models) and it sounds just fine through a Marshall practice amp (Made in the UK)

Also, point out to your parents that an unplugged electric guitar makes very little noise, which can be a real bonus during those early days of practice.

Best of luck, David

look here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverberation

Thanks for showing me this site yesterday.
I've been in touch with them to get one of those t-shirts mailed to England.

This guy was a genius, everbody who values musical freedom should support this site.

By the way "Johnny Cash at San Quentin Prison" was the first album I ever bought when I was 11 years old. It had a great influence on my music (and still does)

Keep the faith

I guess I'm too spoilt, I've got a laptop with a wireless connection ...

The way I learnt (34 years ago when I had no money and the web didn't exist), was to play simple up and down strokes with a pick along to simple records.

I believe the first song I ever played along to was Buddy Holly singing Everyday. (showing my age) It was only three chords.
The best strummers ever (in my opinion) are probably the Ramones, Play along with Johnny Ramone and you'll soon get the idea.

I know we're going way off topic here but thanks for link.

I've been a Johnny Cash fan for 37 years (I'm 48 years old now), and I'm just going to have to get one of those t-shirts!

thanks

That is a good one.

If you need to download a metronome and you use Linux checkout

http://linux-sound.org/mut.html

By the way James are you from the Starkville where Johnny Cash got locked up for picking flowers?

Do you have regular access to a computer?

There are several software metronomes available on the web.

Personally I use Linux and of course all software is free ...

Get both in one package, I have a Gretsch semi-acoustic, sounds great plugged in or not.

It depends on various factors.

One tip is to make sure your fingers are clean when you start playing, this will make the strings last longer and sound brighter.

Acoustic guitar strings tend to be brass wound as well. Here in forever damp England I notice that my acoustics' strings  always degrade faster than my electrics.
I don't know about the climate in Ohio!

I would guess that any set of strings are going to sound pretty dead after six months.

You could just trash the beginner's guitar though ...
