Hi Gus ,
I've repaired a lot of accoustic instruments and they are all put together using animal hide glue . They
use this so that they can be taken apart for repairs by simply steaming the glued joints . ( That sounds a little simpler than it is ) . Also , you don't have to clean the old glue out of the joint , because the new glue will reactivate the old glue . I've always used the Franklin premixed stuff .
Now having said that , if it's a break that you know you will never need to take apart again , I would use any good white wood glue .
ie , Elmers , Franklin , or Titebond they're all good stuff .
Sounds like this break is in the headstock ? I've repaired a few of those , and they have worked out just fine .........
You would'nt want to use anything but Hide glue for a neck and body joint repair in case the instrument ever needs a neck reset ........

Hey Pix ,
My wife doesn't really mind either , it's just kind of a joke between us . Also , she knows as well as I do that my vintage instrument investments have done better
over the last ten years than our retirement investments .
L O L .........Go figure..........

Hey Pix ,
You gotta tell me your secret , how on earth do you manage to keep your wife in the dark when you add an instrument ?
My wife is completely illiterate when it comes to guitars and fiddles , but she knows right away if there's something different in my stable . With eight guitars and eight fiddles , you'd think a new addition would just blend in . But noooo......
For instance......I always keep two Dunlop capos in my gig case . I also had a new one still in the package right ?
Well one night I was playing and I had opened the new one earlier that day and I grabbed it and put it on .......
Right away she goes , is that a new capo.........???!!!???
How on earth does she know ???? These things are the same color except maybe the new one looked new ..

Hi Deb ,
Welcome to Chordie , you're gonna love this site .
There's a few of us old guitar and fiddle players here that always want to talk fiddles .
I've never played one , but I've heard that the Fender
FV 1 is a sweet instrument .
I bet it's nice to have controls right on the fiddle . I
play accoustics with a separate stand alone preamp .
Do you also play guitar ?

Hey Frankster ,
You're right about the three week summer.........L O L .
Really though , having a business that allows me to work outdoors all summer long almost makes up for the winter when I'm cooped up in my shop , except when the weather is really crappy and I have to be out in it .
Hey Badeye , oddly enough
you did make me feel better , ( a little ) . Have fun at your kitchen jam tonight . Nothing like having friends and music around you .
Believe it or not , last weekend we played an out door party and it was seventy
degrees . Tonight it's gonna be temps in the teens and blizzard conditions , go figure ........We do play an indoor party tomorow night ,
so thinking about that helps...........

It's supposed to be spring , but not so you would notice . I just found out we're
supposed to get snow dumped on us AGAIN .
This morning I had to change one of my pieces of equipment back over for snow removal ,!!!??!!??!!!?? .
What's going on ..........???
I just hope I can recover my usual good humor before tomorow night as we're playing a party . ( maybe that's all it will take ???? ) .

I had to come on here a week or so ago and get help to name our little band . Thanks to badeye and the rest of my pals , it didn't take long .
For some reason I can trot out a new original song at the drop of a hat , but couldn't come up with a name . L O L .

Re: woman singing (9 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Joy ,
Another idea is to do what I do . I usually keep one guitar tuned down one full tone , ( from top string tune :
D , G , C , F , A , D . )
Then if I want to play in standard , I just capo 2nd fret .
You do need a chromatic tuner to do this ( or you won't be able to get the C )
Otherwise tune the top string to D then relative tune the rest . Hope this helps .

Re: bridge seems worn (4 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hi Joy ,
All of my vintage flat tops are like that and have been for years and years . I would'nt worry about it unless it's bothering the bridge saddle itself , ( the plastic or bone piece that the strings actually sit on ) .
Yes , I agree with Geo , don't worry about it .

Re: Question on lowering adjustable bridge on Alvarez Regent. (4 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hey 3CF ,
I bet it really sounds nice .
In my experience Fishmans are good stuff .
You can use a straight edge to check the frets without taking the strings loose . You'll want to use a short one though because the neck is bowed slightly . Basically just checking maybe five at a time should tell you what you need to know . Good luck............

Hi all ,
Boy oh boy Pix , the country musicians sure get abused around here . Those are all good ones , but in my neighborhood they call those redneck jokes . I've got a million of em but my favorite is .........
" How does the cop know you're a redneck ? "
" When you ask him to hold your beer while you fish out your license ".........

Re: Question on lowering adjustable bridge on Alvarez Regent. (4 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hi 3CF ,
Without more details , it's hard to say . Are you just starting out , or been playing a while ? The first guitar I ever had way back when I was ten , was an old Stella accoustic with action that you could drive a truck through . It was badly in need of a neck reset , so there was no fixing it . Learning on that guitar made me a better player . When ever I got to play one of my friends guitars , I could really
rip ...........
Back to your question.......
If you decide to take it in somewhere , be sure to get an estimate so you can decide if it's worth the cost to you .
If the neck is in good shape , it might only have one fret standing proud of it's neighbors . You can probably fix this yourself with a sanding block . Then try lowering the action again .
Let us know what you end up doing ........

Only one thing I can think of , off the cuff . It's something I learned at a jam party about three years ago .

Re: stupid (29 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Upyerkilt ,
After reading your story about the oil can , I have to tell this story of my bro. in law.
One fall day he was raking leaves and decided he would rake them into this ditch he had going across his property
and burn them . This ditch is about eight foot across and about five foot deep . Well
he got them all raked in and got a two gallon gasoline can
and poured gas all over this huge pile of leaves . My sister
was watching from the window as he set about trying to lite this cocktail . After striking many matches ,
and throwing them in , it just would'nt lite , so he went and got more gas , poured it on .
( The temp was about eighty five degrees that day ) .
Then he started with the matches again . After twenty min. of messing around the vapor was mixed in pretty good .
Well it finally went , WOOOMP . Knocked him on his rear . My sister just saw the fireball and his baseball cap go flying . When he picked himself up , his face was black , no eyebrows to speak of and his cap was about twenty feet away with the visor burnt . He always says the worst part was that when it was all done , the smouldering leaves were all over the yard again ...........

Re: stupid (29 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Paranormal ,
It was a blast untill I crossed the boat's wake , that's when the whole rig took a nose dive and went down . Before I knew what was going on , I was stuck in the chair by water pressure ,
and I could feel the skis skidding on the bottom in about twelve foot of water .
About that time the rope finally broke , if it had'nt , I
doubt I would be here now .
Jerome ,
I know where you're coming from with the sailboat . Our diveboat is a open trihull with relatively shallow freeboard ,
and I have a nice long fold up boarding ladder mounted on the stern , so it's easy to board even with our rigs on .
Having said that though , we have been out on days that were so rough , that we were
real carefull about not getting too close to the boat anywhere but the stern .......

Re: stupid (29 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Hi ,
I've done a lot of stupid things , but I'll just recount
two of them here...........
First of all.........
NEVER , NEVER , NEVER ,
get drunk , fasten a lawn chair to a pair of water skis ,
tie on the tow rope , and go skiing with a beer in one hand and a cooler in the other...........
The second was just last summer . My bro and I were scuba diving our favorite lake
and we found a large old anchor . Well I decided I had to have it , and well , have you ever tried to surface carrying an anchor ? So I popped a portable buoy on it
so we could come back for it .
The next week we came back with a lift bag , everything went smoothly ,
we found it , strapped on the lift bag and started filling it from my octopus . I could'nt have had more than a few cubic foot of air in it before this thing lunged off the bottom . first it almost dragged me with it , then after I got control of the situation , and started to ascend under it , the thing must have broke surface , and somehow lost the air in the bag . Well I was only about eight foot off the bottom on my way up when this anchor came past me free falling . You can imagine how it was moving , we were in about forty foot of water .
Let's just say I'll be a lot more carefull next time.......
( It was still fun though ).....

Re: what is a good brand of Fiddle strings? (2 replies, posted in Other string instruments)
Hi there ,
I used to use strickly perlons ( nylon core ) strings.
But over the years I've come to like the plain steel strings better . They're cheaper also , and not much difference in tone .
I think fiddle string preference is much like guitar string preference , it's
all subjective .
Most teachers or instructors in my experience
have an agenda for recomending supplies . I've
even heard of them insisting that you buy a certain brand
from a certain supplier and finding out that after buying the overpriced strings , the
teacher actually received a
commission ................
I call this " kick back "......

Re: Raising my action..! (5 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hi Linus ,
You should be able to just lift the saddle out and put a shim under it . if you have a decent music store in your neighborhood , they shoud have shims . Just make sure the shim and the bottom of the bridge saddle is flat . I've seen some real butcher jobs done on bridge saddles . Also the bridge saddle should not be glued in . it's made that way for easy servicing .
Another tip , whenever I service a bridge saddle , I put a capo on right in front of the nut ( the thing that the strings sit in up by the headstock ) . This keeps all the strings in place when you loosen them and take out the bridge pins , makes the whole job easier ............
Hope this helps .......

Hey Doc,
Whenever I see those guitars , I have to laugh .
I also like the ones that come brand new , except all beat up like so and sos . The
day I spent money on something like that or the
" signature guitars " , is the day I quit playing . Like I want a guitar with someone elses name on it .
It all goes back to these guys that go to their witts end trying to copy someone elses sound ...........

Re: Reality or Mith? (30 replies, posted in Acoustic)
This is going to sound funny , but I think it's both .
I get so tired of hearing about all these second and third generation actors and singers , who say it's in their
blood . It's crap , anything can be learned . When the process is started before you're four years old , I'd say you definitely have a leg up ??? As far as singing voices go , we all have it to start with . Only use and cultivation is the key .
Now having said all this , I'm mentally looking back at my dad's side of the family ,
and every male that I can think of was a musician in some form . And I keep glancing at an old , old photogragh of my paternal great grand father ( that was
obviously taken using flash powder ) That I keep on my office wall . In that photo with him are the instruments that he played professionally .
Don't know much about brass , but looks like a bass and a tenor sax ? a clarinet ,
a trombone , violin , and piano .........So I guess you tell me.......................

Re: SERIAL NUMBERS:HOW OLD IS YOUR GUITAR (2 replies, posted in Electric)
Hi Doc ,
In my experience Gibson
was notorious for using somewhat random serial number systems . At least on the older ones . The best bet is to take the serial number along with the physical characteristics and date it that way . I have what I have nailed down to be a 1947 L-50 .( By using four different reference manuals ),
in my small collection .
The earliest guitar I have is a very nice Kay violin guitar
( with scroll headstock ) that
is stamped # 4 inside ..........
